The USB mouse on my Acer Aspire A515-43 intermittently stops working. The cursor suddenly freezes, stays in one place for a while, and then jumps to the new position. Sometimes it wouldn't wake up at all, and I revived it by disconnecting and reconnecting the USB connector. When the cursor gets frozen and when it wakes up, the PC makes a weak beep, the same as when I manipulate the USB connector. The touchpad works normally during mouse failures.

I've tested several mice and all USB ports, and the symptom remains unchanged. The problem doesn't occur when I start the PC in the morning but comes up a little later. The Core Temp app shows that the CPU temperature is higher than in another identical PC (I have two), but not remarkably high. I opened the PC, cleaned the dust, and verified that the fan was working. I exclude the driver and BIOS problems.

Is there anything more I can do about it?

    Uninstall the PS/2 mouse driver in Device Manager while having the USB mouse plugged-in, make sure internet is working and reboot, windows will install the best driver. Turning off the Touchpad may also improve the USB mouse performance.

  • Hi @Lason is it a wired or wireless mouse?

    @Alejandro_AC: it is a wired mouse.

    @Puraw:

    There are two mouse types in Device Manager: USB and I2C. They apparently use the same driver. I uninstalled the I2C driver and rebooted. The same driver is loaded again.

    I have two identical laptops. One of them works fine, so I exclude driver problems. But I'd verified that "the best driver is already installed." It was the first thing I checked.

    The mouse problem hasn't hit me since yesterday night. It's intermittent. It may be gone or not. I wouldn't know.

    The touchpad is normally switched off but it doesn't affect the mouse problem.

  • Download the chipset driver from the download page depending on whether you have Windows 10 or Windows 11 and reinstall on top:

    What version of Windows do you have?

    Thank you.
    All the best.

    @Alejandro_AC:

    I used this laptop with its current driver collection for several years, and I never had any problems. I have one more identical laptop, and it works just fine. Therefore, I don't believe it is a driver problem. For now, I'll hold off on driver experiments. I'll try this path when the situation becomes unbearable. I'm not there yet. But thank you, anyway.
