HDMI audio problem with CB3-431 Chromebook

I have been using an HDMI cable to connect our Chromebook CB3-431 to our Samsung TV for several years. Yesterday, the audio just stopped working on the Chromebook, but only when the HDMI cable is plugged into the TV. The sound comes out of the television, but it isn't very loud. The sound on the laptop works fine when the cable is not plugged into the TV. The visual signal is never affected. I suspected the problem was the cable, so I tried using a different HDMI cable, but the problem did not go away. So . . . I am guessing the issue might be in the laptop, but I am not sure. Thanks in advance for any ideas of what to try.

Does the audio on the TV work well for all other uses? There are three options that I see… The issue is with the laptop, the issue is with the cable and the issue is with the TV. You have pretty much tested the cable by swapping it so that leaves the laptop and TV as possibilities. If the audio on the TV is working fine for other devices connected (maybe test with a DVD player on the HDMI?) then that will point toward the laptop. Your workaround if the issue is with the laptop is to use a different set of speakers.

Thanks for your response. I also think it is likely in the HDMI connection itself, but I'm not sure if it's the TV or laptop. I will see if I can dig up a portable set of speakers and plug them into the Chromebook and see what happens. Thanks again.
