I have an ACER HELIOS 300 PH315-55 and many settings are hidden in the bios that you can view with the Ctrl + S key, but even after that I'm not able to find the option to disable IRST.

    1. First open msconfig boot tab and change boot to safe boot.
    2. Then shut down machine normally.
    3. Then re-enter the BIOS menu by tapping F1 on startup.
    4. Go to the MAIN tab. Press Ctrl+S.
    5. A VMD controller should appear. Disable it.
    6. Press F10 to save settings and exit into Windows safe boot to load standard AHCI SATA mode drivers.
    7. Open msconfig to uncheck safe boot. Shut down machine normally.
    8. Next boot will be normal Windows in AHCI SATA mode.

So, what changes would this cause in my machine, like would it cause any data loss, etc. and what things should i consider doing before switching.

The main change is that the machine will then be able to install other operating systems such as Mint in single or multi-boot mode. While it shouldn't cause data loss or noticeable performance difference, there are no 100% guarantees. So making a recovery image stick is advisable. If you don't intend to install other operating systems, then VMD should remain enabled as-is.
