I have a 17inch Swift x dangerously overheating - like burns to touch it, even when powered off

This evening I left laptop plugged in and lid closed for a couple of hours to charge.

Came back to use it and it wouldn't turn on.

Was burning hot to touch - like scolding to the touch, I thought it was going to catch fire.

I unplugged it and it took a couple of hours for it to cool down, and now it's working again.

I want it replaced because:

a) It got so hot it must've damaged the components inside

b) I can't leave it plugged in to charge in case it catches fire, so I can only use it plugged in.

Tried to submit to the form on the website but it doesn't work - won't accept any serial or product number I put in - the 'continue' button doesn't work.

Please will someone tell me how to resolve this. It was almost £1200+ - that's a lot of money to spend on something that worked for a few months, and I know don't feel safe having in my house.

You should not be having these problems with a new 17 inch Swift X laptop, as those symptoms seem like its coming from a problem with faulty mosats in your laptops primary power stage next to the power port that are shortening out and overheating and allowing a current to the chipset that is also overheating and when you turn the laptop on the cpu, gpu and chipset plus these mosats generate tremendous heat hence and why your laptop is so hot!

You need to contact Acer by phone in your area (don't worry about the online service booking or labels) which I presume is in the UK so book your laptop for an urgent Tech Support Repair by phone, don’t use your laptop as you can do more dame to it. If your laptop is under Acer 12 months warranty, you should demand that Acer replaces the motherboard with a new lone, as the cpu, gpu and chipset have been affected and their lifespan have been greatly reduced, this is a quality control issue that unfortunately and lately is more common as these laptops are built in, I won't mention any country names and hence and why this is becoming more common with all laptop manufacturers that build their PCs in that country. Good luck and hope this helps you out and you get this resolved as I know that its very frustrating and annoying.

It looks like a hardware issue. You might have to replace the battery and check it to isolate the issue. You might have to use a cool pad. You have to check whether the fan inside the laptop or cooling components if it is present are working properly.

If your laptop is in warranty you can contact the warranty dept. Go to the website support.acer.com - chose your country. On the new page - scroll down - click on "contact support". Scroll down. You can find the phone no to contact the warranty dept.

If it is out of warranty, please contact local store or

Go to the website support.acer.com - chose your country. On the new page - scroll down - Click on "Repair My Acer" - Request to have your Acer product repaired. There will be charges for repair.

Additional info to contact Acer Store: Please visit the website - support.acer.com - chose your country - click on shop. You can buy desktop, laptop, monitor and accessories. Alternatively, on the top right corner you can find the phone no to contact Acer store. For the parts which are not available on Acer store, you have to contact local store.

It could be a hardware fault, if you are within the warranty period get help from Acer support centre in your region, if not, replace the screen by yourself or get it fixed by a professional in a local Repair shop.

Just don't use that Acer Canada link or use the Acer USA site. Since you are talking in British pounds I assume you are in the UK. You have to use Acer's UK site to open a warranty case, the other locales will not know about your serial number or warranty.

Hi Laura & All,

I have now had three consecutive Swift X's here in the UK and they have all gone down the burning road.

I bought the first last November 29 and it burned out overnight on 8-9 December. PC World swapped it for a brand new replacement. That one burned out on 12-13 January 2023; again PC World swapped it for a brand new replacement. That one lasted until last week 13-14 July when it again burned out overnight. This time PC World have sent it away for repair but have no idea what to do with it; I'm awaiting their response.

Based on three consecutive identical 'random' dangerous failures, without an explanation and root-cause remedy I could never put a Swift X back in my house on charge and feel safe. Also we hate the burning smell that permeates the house and the laptop being unusable for a random period of time.

I will take legal action if I don't get my money back.

That sounds like the issue is more likely to be in your electrical service than in the Swift design, since only a few others have seen similar issues. To have three systems in a row present the same symptoms tends to point at the environment…
