Aspire 8930G: Power supply connected led flashing

This laptop has two sets of power leds, one set lights up when the power adapter is connected, the other lights when the computer is switched on.

Sometimes the 'connected' led turns off with no apparent reason, while the computer is in use. After a while the battery is drained low and the computer hibernates and turns itself off. Pushing or fiddling with the power adapter connector (DC IN) brings the 'connected' light back on, and I can restart the computer.

Lately the 'connected' light has been off more stubbornly, i.e.. it takes longer, with more pushing and fiddling before it turns on.

Now there is something new: I connect the power adapter and the 'connected' lights start blinking at about one blink per second. The orange charging light on the front rim goes on intermittently, or it flashes with irregular blink lengths. It is mostly on for 3-4 seconds, up to 12 seconds, and off mostly < 1 second, sometimes up to 3 seconds.

UPDATE: I exchanged the power adapter with that of an Aspire 5112WLMi, and now both Aspires run and charge perfectly of the other's power adapter. Switching back, the 8930 again blinks and does not charge. (END UPDATE)

I should add that the battery is worn, the computer has suggested replacement for a long time. A replacement battery did not charge, so I switched back to the old one. However, I have made a separate post in this forum about this battery replacement problem.

Is there anything to be done? Should I send it in for repair? Is it worth it?

I do not know where it was bought, I got it second hand.
