no cd rom drive

i have an acer aspire 5100 notebook given to me. No wonder, it has an intermittent problem. Sometimes on boot the cdrom shows up, other times it doesnt and i have to keep rebooting and eventually the cdrom drive shows up.

Can someone help me with this?

I am somewhat literate with computers.

Hi sounds to me like your laptop could use some service more than likely the ribbon cable inside the computer is loose or else the drive itself may be on it's last legs you didn't say if anything else is affected, but i would suggest that you get it serviced.

Thanks for the post but i am determined to repair this myself if possible.

In the meantime i got another cdrom that fits this acer and it does the same thing.

I will check the ribbon cable.
