How do I get a valid Windows Vista Home Premium product key for my Acer Aspire 5050?

My hard drive failed in my Acer Aspire 5050.  Replaced it, reinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium with appropriate product key, but Microsoft says it is invalid.  Microsoft wants me to buy a new copy of Windows & there are no recovery disks available from Acer for my laptop.  What can I do?

The product key on the bottom of the notebook is an OEM product key.  This product key does not work for retail versions of the operating system.  The original shipping load would work on the system without requiring you to enter a product key.

If you did not make or are no longer able to obtain the recovery medias, you would need to purchase an operating system of your choice for installation.
