Hello, I currently have an Intel Pentium T4200 installed on my laptop but I want to upgrade to an Intel Pentium T9600 as it's affordable and newer while having the same socket. Is it possible? If not can I get a list of best CPUs that are compatible with this laptop please? Thanks in advance.

Your system supports Penryn-3M processors only. Anything newer won't work with the chipset.

Thanks for your reply, from what you sent to me, the T9600 will not work at all because of 800mhz FSB limitation caused by the GL40 Chipset, so I was thinking of buying the T8100 processor, from the User Benchmark link it looks that the T8100 processor is fully compatible but I also saw that there is a T8300 model, which is slightly better than the T8100. Should I risk it and buy a T8300 or play safe with the T8100? Both CPUs are realy cheap on AliExpress so no prolem. I also know that there are two models above T8300, the T9300 and T9500 but these CPUs are more expensive and not worth to me as I don't play games or edit videos/images. What would you suggest? If you're brazilian I can speak in portuguese if you want :D

That's nice to know, I've searched for "Penryn-3M processors" and from what I saw it has to do with L2 cache right? 3M means 3MB cache correct? If that's the case then the T8300 is compatible and the T9300 and T9500 are not sice they have 6MB of L2 cache. Thanks for your reply.

Not just the cache, but the FSB speed and socket type. Your T4200 has an 800MT/s front side bus and Socket P. Trying to put a CPU that requires a faster bus will not work as will anything that's not on a Socket P. It looks like the T9300 ought to work… But make sure you can return it if it doesn't.

I won't risk with the T9300, I'm buying the T8300. Thank you for your help.

Just a bit of further advice to the above, have a look here at CPU Upgrade for all the related Socket P - Penryn - T4200 FSB 800MHzx CPUs that CPU Upgrade recommend and tested as an upgrade and give a graph of the upgrade to a T6600 L2 cache 2MB CPU and list on their site, but it will only give you 13.6% relative performance increase to the T4200 800MHz FSB - L2 cache 1MB and even if you upgrade to the T8300 it will give you max 18% improvement or the top CPU the , which is not much even with the T9900 - 2.8GHz - FSB 1066Mhz - 6MB cache - TDP 32W and will give you maybe 25% relative performance increase that is a much better upgrade. .

From an earlier post, the best "CPU type" this system supports is the Penryn 3M, so in theory the best CPU is the T8300. Even though the T9900 has the same socket and is way more powerful, it won't work at all because of the increased FSB and 6MB L2 cache, at least in theory

  • Have you also thought about installing a 2.5" ssd and increasing the amount of ram?
