Nitro 5 AN515-42 AMD GPU Driver issues I am constantly getting issues from the AMD software detected

Alright folks! I hope you are having a good day. Well i own a Acer Nitro 5 AN515-42 (Ryzen 5 2500u with Vega 8 Graphics as well as RX 560x 4gb dedicated card) for some quite time now (3-4 years) it has been working more or less fine. It had it fair share of issues but recently i am getting a new issues with the GPU drivers. I am constantly getting issues from the AMD software that "AMD software detected that the display driver has failed to load on your system".

In the device manager under display adapters Rx 560x is shown as disabled by the windows as the driver reported issues with the device. I have reinstalled the drivers multiple times. I used DDU to remove the old drivers and then downloaded various stable version from the official site but nothing works. I even went onto to download the original drivers from the Acer support site but they too are not working.

I have tried everything i could that is reinstalling the drivers multiple time, resetting my windows, performing sfc scans and dism health checks and restore health commands and now i am out of options. The AMD forums does not have solution and thus here i am.

Here are some relevant information which might help you:

Windows 10 Home single language

16 GB Ram

Processor: Ryzen 5 2500u

GPU: Radeon Rx 560x 4gb

Samsung Evo 1 TB SSD (With Windows)

Toshiba 1TB HDD

Windows version: 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2604)

AMD Software version : 22.11.2

AMD versions which i have tried: - 22.5.1, 23.2.1, The OEM driver from Acer's website

I have also suffered two BSOD with stop codes: THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER and SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXECPTION (What failed? atikmdag.sys)

I was able to make the drivers work again after multiple reinstalls of the driver, for 1-2 days before this issue started to reappear again. The laptop froze i had to perform a hard shutdown (Holding down the power key) and once i started it again this issue started to occur again.

I would also like to add that while installing the drivers all the versions correctly detect RX 560x, I would also like to add that the ball bearing of my GPU fan have worn out, and thus the fan makes a a lot of noise and spins at a lower RPM but i don't see how it is connected to driver issues. Also the Vega 8 works just fine with no issues.

Is my GPU dying? or umm dead?

Yes i can do this, but now i can say with full surity that the GPU has died. IF i try to reinstall drivers the laptop freezes, if i try to enable the GPU from device manager the windows starts to stutter and freezes, forcing me to shutdown the laptop with power key.

So i think we all can now safely say the GPU has died/shorted, i guess it really was last the breath for it when it worked intermittently.

I see no point in trying now we all have done what we could.

The driver software seems to be reporting an issue with hardware, not with itself. What temps are you seeing?

Try this fix Fix graphics device problems with error code 43 if that doesn’t work then it’s a hardware issue and your RX 560X is funky/faulty, as an operating RX 560X graphics hardware will always operate and accept a driver and work, while yours does not, there are no other issues that will or should stop this gpu from working unless the gpu is faulty. Fixing the fan will make no difference to a gpu driver not beeing able to be installed. If you really want to get an idea what is happeniing, get a tech to check the gpu rama dn mossats if they are not shorted and have cause the RX 560X to burn out.

These are the part numbers for the replacement mobos for your AN515-42, as you can put the R7-2700U mobo into your case also, as with a burned out gpu the best is to replace the mobo if you want to spend that sort of money and like spend on eBay NBQ3R11001 Acer NITRO 5 An515-42 Motherboard Mb128 which is £832.60 with free postage😁big deal with the free postage.

I recently had a fan cleanup and thermal repasting, the temps are fine in my opinion like currently the Vega 8 is reporting 41 degree celcius, all in all the laptop does not feel like its getting too hot. even the outlet of air from the air vents is fine indicating there is no blockage.

I followed the guide you shared with me, since i had already performed most of the steps already like updating drivers, roll backing them and reinstalling new ones after getting rid of old i can safely say nothing worked.

I am not willing to spend that kind of money on this laptop now because its too expensive and the specs are obsolete now. I can instead use this money too to buy a new laptop or heck even build a PC.

ultimate solution is to sell your laptop and buy a new one preferrably 12th or 13th gen Intel processor coupled with NVIDIA graphics to avoid hassles and headaches in the future. 😉

True that, but i am inclined to build a PC. Since only the dedicated GPU has gone puff i think i will use this laptop for school work and general use, just not to play games or do graphic intensive work such as video editing. I mean i think i can still use it. Heck might even install linux on it now xD

Yeah but what about the 560x temps? Overheating probably the reason why it failed.

I can't check its temp as both the Nitrosense and Windows Task manager does not show it because it is disabled. So there is no way for me to check the temps. If i try to enable it via device manager the laptop freezes.

Yes, I understand. But what I'm trying to get at is that the 560X temps were apparently NOT fine before it was disabled by the software. As suggested in my first post right after your first post, it seems to be a hardware issue, not software or driver issue. My guess is the chip has failed from overheating at some point in time. maybe there is a malware in the laptop

scan using windows defender/security, then adwcleaner, smadav and avast premium security/symantec or mcafee endpoint security

I ran the Windows defender scans nothing came up all seems fine i also ran malwarebytes it too showed everything clean.

I would also like to add that i once again tried to reinstall the drivers and after a reinstall the error came up again but after rebooting the laptop RX 560x Worked, it showed up in both the task manager and the nitrosense, the windows device manager showed it as working, so i performed a restart once again to see if it will keep on working but sadly no it again failed and i am back at square one.

Was this like a last breath? because i think if the GPU was shorted it should not work no matter what. In any case it is not working once again.

Adding on to my previous update, i again managed to make the card work again this time for hours and even after subsequent restarts it worked, but now after a 30 min break (the laptop was in sleep mode) the error again came up.

If it was mine and seemed to be working intermittently like this, I'd open it up again, remove the thermal module/heatsinks and clean up the board around the cpu and gpu with 91% rubbing alcohol. Then re-paste the heatsinks with kryonaut or arcticmx4. Put it back together to see what happens.

Hi,

If you are still holding on to that laptop you can try installing linux (ubntu) and try running stresstest on that GPU, I am facing same GPU issue and have found that it is working on linux but is giving same error when running windows have tried hard windows reset also but 1 thing is sure that GPU is not faulty it driver or kernal that is causing the issue

Yes i am still holding onto it, i use it a normal laptop no heavy work. I tried installing Linux on it but failed. I tried everything from Linux Mint to Pop!OS, there is some kernel level issue as none of the installer can detect my HDD, i tried sleep waking for it to detect the HDD but for some reason or another it either won't install or even if it does due to the same GPU error the boot fails as driver fail to load, I tried using various cmds such as IOMMU=soft and others to use my iGPU but the performance is very trash.

Currently using it Windows 11 running on basic microsoft display driver or at most Vega 8 Drivers. If you know a way to install Linux i would be more than happy do it as it will be light and the performance will be great.
