This laptop is 16 plus years old, its an Intel Socket P (PPGA478) and has the Intel GM965 Express chipset, Acer has stopped all support for the Aspire 7720 laptop as its obsolete and there are no bios or driver updates and you will have to get all these drivers from the web and a known and reliable source, so be careful especially if you intend upgrading the bios for such an old laptop that is prone to its bios being bricked as the bios chip is so old. .

This laptop oem specs were withy the Core 2 Duuo T5450 TDP 35W oem cpu and its integrated GMA X3100 graphics, 2GB DDR2 ram (max is 4GB DDR2 ram) the max spec cpu that I would upgrade this laptop to is the Core 2 Duo T7800C TDP 35W (look at this list at CPU-Upgrade as they list all the Socket P (PPGA478) cpu's) as this cpu can work with max 4GB DDR2-667 MHz SDRAM of shared "on chip" level 2 cache, an 800 MHz frontside bus and L2 4MB cache, and cpu upgrade will improve relative performance by 35% to the oem cpu T5450 and its a viable upgrade.

Note, I wouldn't upgrade to the top of the range Core 2 Extreme X7900 TDP 44W (socket PBGA479, PPGA478) that is also listed as the same socket and its quoted to improve relative performance by 60% as it might not work with your laptop, and it could be problematic for this laptop to run, so be careful.

i'm not going by the socket i'm going by acer 7720 pdf

    CPU type

    Intel® CoreTM2 Duo processor T7300/T7500/T7700 (4MB, L2 cache 2.0/ 2.2/2.4, 800 MHz FSB) or higher

    Intel® Core™2 Duo processor T5450/T7100 (2MB, L2 cache 1.66/1.8, 667/ 800 MHz FSB) or higher

i run linux either cbpp11 or arco linux openbox and this laptop runs well 533mhz fsb or 667mhz fsb 4gig ram .

i have a few of these and would like 800 fsb 4gig ram .

the problem i'm having is kernial panic when using the T7700 .

the diff stepping in the cpu the ones i'm trying is slaf7 and there is SLA43 i don't have one to check.

is the stepping listed anywhere that acer used ?

    ok

i got it working with the old ram , the T7700 does work but the extra heat from the faster cpu causes the fan to race and modulate continually under load.

but even with that said it runs flawless with debian 11 crunchbang++ and arcolinux openbox

Have you looked at the T9500 its 2.6ghz I believe and has a 800mhz FSB Ive used them in the Dell Latitude 830 in the past. Also if you can get it the DDR2 800mhz ram is supported up to 8gb to 4gb sticks. should still be very usable for basic web browsing and writing emails and documents especially if you are using Linux. Windows 10 should work fine too
