144HZ Unavailable With Acer Aspire 7 A715-51G

Hello there!

I have an Acer Aspire 7 A715-51G and I got a new monitor (Viewsonic XG2405-2) to use as my main display but I can't seem to make 144Hz work with this monitor.

1. Can only get up to 120Hz on my new monitor when I use my laptop.
2. The laptop itself supports 144Hz, has HDMI 2.1 input, and the integrated display works with 144Hz with no problem.
3. I tried the same monitor with the same HDMI 1.4 cable with my desktop and it worked, but no luck getting 144Hz with the laptop.
4. The laptop only has 1 HDMI port and a spare TYPE-C/Thunderbolt port I can use for my monitors. Depending on what we find out, I'm either getting a display port adapter for this monitor or an HDMI adapter for my other monitor.

Any help is appreciated!

Acer usually only warrants 60Hz minimum for any external monitor. Higher rates are listed only if the specific monitor has actually been tested and achieved this rate. For example, here's a rate table for another a715 series model showing rates achieved with different monitors. If you're achieving 120Hz, it sounds like the monitor is a good match --- but perhaps not the best match --- for this laptop. There doesn't seem to be a similar rate table published for your -51G so it'd be a trial and error approach to getting the monitor to work at 144Hz with the TBT port. Might work. Might not.

If you're venturesome, there is a new BIOS firmware display-related update at this link that might affect this rate but not guaranteed..

It sounds like the issue could be related to the HDMI port on your laptop. Even though your laptop has an HDMI 2.1 port, it's possible that it may not be able to output 144Hz at the monitor's resolution (1080p) over HDMI. It's also possible that the HDMI cable you are using may not be able to support 144Hz.

Here are a few things you can try:

1. Check your laptop's graphics settings to make sure it is set to output at 144Hz. Go to Display Settings, click on Advanced Display Settings, and then click on Display Adapter Properties. In the properties window, click on the Monitor tab and make sure the refresh rate is set to 144Hz.
2. Try using a different HDMI cable that is rated for 144Hz.
3. Try using a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter and connect the monitor to the Thunderbolt/USB-C port on your laptop. DisplayPort is generally better suited for high refresh rate displays, and it's possible that this will allow you to achieve 144Hz on your monitor.

If none of these solutions work, it may be worth checking with Acer support to see if they have any suggestions or if there are any known issues with your laptop's HDMI port.
