Can't connect to the internet through Ethernet cable on Aspire A515-56G

Hi All,

Bought an Aspire today, went to set it up and it wouldn't connect to my internet through my ethernet cable (that works with several other laptops)

Connected through Wi-fi instead and got it set up, installed all the windows updates and installed the latest bios and made sure drivers were upto date from Acer.

Computer will still not connect over ethernet, but still fine of wi-fi. Am gettind some errors in event viewer regarding the RealTek network card as follows :-

Device PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_14641025&REV_15\01000000684CE00000 had a problem starting.

I have tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling but I don't seem to be able to install an older version as it says the one installed is the best.

Anyone have any ideas what the problem I am having is?

Did you try the Realtek driver from the support site for your model?

I used the one from that exact site, my S/N brought it up, should I use the Realtek one instead?

Sorry, that wasn't very clear! I meant I used the Acer one from the first link you gave.

If it is still not working

Try windows x

Go to device manager - Go to Network adapter. Expand it

Uninstall the wired driver from device manager. Don’t restart the computer.

Go to support.acer.com

chose your country

type snid or chose your model

go to drivers

Install the wired driver

It should work fine..

What operating system it was shipped with. If it was shipped windows 10 and if you are currently using windows 11 you can try running windows update and check.

Note : The best solution for this issue is to get a external usb wired adapter from a nearby store

If it is still not working then we have to do a refresh and reset

click on start - settings - update and security - recovery - reset this pc - get started

or

on start - type here to search - type reset this pc - click on reset this pc on the top - click on get started

It will show you keep my files and remove everything

chose keep my files

chose the account - type the password - click on local reinstall - click on reset

It will be in progress..

login to computer and start using the computer.

If it is still not working

click on start - settings - update and security - recovery - reset this pc - get started

chose remove everything

click on local reinstall - just remove my files - click on reset

It will be in progress

Note:

If you do refresh ( keep my files ) - all your personal files like pictures, music , documents , videos will still be intact. Only the applications will be lost

If you do reset ( remove everything ) - you are doing a factory default. It will become like a day one computer. It will wipe out everything and take your computer to day one like a new computer.

You can also do the recovery in an alternative way..

There are two alt keys on the keyboard. If you look at the bottom row of keyboard you can see the one on the left side of space bar and the other on the right side of space bar. The alt key on the right side will be looking like alt, alt gr or alt car. Turn off the computer. Hold the alt key on the left and tap f10 continuously. It will go to repair mode. It will show you chose an option, continue, troubleshoot. If it is not going to repair mode, turn off the computer. Turn on the computer. Hold the right alt key ( alt gr or alt car or alt ) and then tap f10 continuously. It will go to chose an option continue and troubleshoot..

It will show you chose an option, continue, troubleshoot

Go to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc

click on keep my files ( only applications will be lost ) chose your account and type your password - click on local reinstall - click on reset

It will be in progress

If the keep my files option is not working

Go to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc – click on remove everything – click on local reinstall – just remove my files – click on reset

It will reinstall windows.

If the just remove my files is not working..

Go to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc – click on remove everything – click on local reinstall – Fully clean the drive – click on reset

It will reinstall windows.

Note: You can also go to chose an option , continue , troubleshoot by holding the alt key + tapping f10 or alt gr + tapping f10 on the keyboard while turning on the computer. Once you see the troubleshoot option, you can stop tapping the f10 and stop holding the alt key. Then you can try the keep my files and remove everything ( just remove by files and fully clean the drive ) by following the steps which was mentioned above.

Even after reinstalling windows if you are facing the same issue then you might have to go back to windows 10

If your laptop is in warranty you can contact the warranty dept. Go to the website support.acer.com - chose your country. On the new page - scroll down - click on "contact support". Scroll down. You can find the phone no to contact the warranty dept.

If it is out of warranty, please contact local store or

Go to the website support.acer.com - chose your country. On the new page - scroll down - Click on "Repair My Acer" - Request to have your Acer product repaired. There will be charges for repair.

Additional info to contact Acer Store: Please visit the website - support.acer.com - chose your country - click on shop. You can buy desktop, laptop, monitor and accessories. Alternatively, on the top right corner you can find the phone no to contact Acer store. For the parts which are not available on Acer store, you have to contact local store.

I don't really want to do a factory reset as ethernet wasn't working when I got it (yesterday) and had to use wifi to get set up and the wi-fi wouldn't initially connect to all my networks and had to do quite a few windows updates before it worked properly.

I don't really no much about computers but this does feel like a config or driver issue that if I knew what I was doing I am sure I could sort!

I have got a usb ethernet port on another laptop, that doesn't have a built in port, and I tried that and it does work so that is a solution at least! Just a bit annoying to have an ethernet port on the computer I can't use.....

It is under warranty as it was only bought yesterday, although it is a refurb so I don't think it is Acer support.

I did uninstall the lan driver and reinstall it, it seemed to be the same driver already as the on the website though and it had ecactly the same issue. It recognizes when I plug an ethernet cable in but just won't send or receive any data.

I will try installing linux on a usb stick and see if I can get ethernet to work on that to get a better idea of if it is just a windows/driver issue.
