I have checked the cables, uninstalled / reinstalled keyboard drivers, but these keys (Fn, Q, left arrow, Esc) are completely unresponsive when typing.

My keyboard backlight doesn't even register the feedback of pressing the keys. Any ideas what it could be? It has been like this for as long as I can remember---I have to type with an external keyboard to access those keys that are unresponsive on the laptop.

I have heard other people have had this problem too, and it appears to be common with this model.

Yes. Common to many models if a keyboard skin isn't used. Usually caused by hygroscopic debris that accumulates on the key switches under the key covers---AKA food crumbs & hair. Often can be remedied by using a soft bristle facial blush brush to gently dig under the key covers while blowing compressed air to help loosen and remove the debris.
