Hello, I tried using the Acer Canada support form but it’s not working properly for me. When I turn on my Acer Swift laptop I get the error code 0xc0000185. Two technicians have taken a look at the laptop. They both tried repairing/reinstalling Windows multiple times using USB drives, with no success. One of the technicians tried replacing the SSD, but still got the same error. We suspect there is a problem with the motherboard, or the processor, or somewhere else. It was suggested to me that I contact Acer. Does anyone have experience with this sort of problem? The laptop is 4 years old and out of warranty. Is this the sort of thing that Acer themselves could fix, if indeed a hardware component other than the SSD is faulty? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

What is the exact Swift model? With Error: 0xc0000185 as Error Code 0xc0000185 is caused by a corruption of files related to the boot function of a Windows PC. Specific files have been deleted or damaged somehow, or something as innocuous as a faulty shutdown or a new peripheral is throwing a spanner in the works.

The best course of action for you would be to roll back your system a few days to before you experienced this problem, using System Restore and then see if the problem goes away. Restoring won’t affect your personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was made.

Now, because you can't really do much or boot properly into Windows, turn on your computer and as soon as you see ANY logo (manufacturers or windows) press and hold the power button down until your computer switches off. You need to interrupt the boot process. You need to do this, two more times. Windows will automatically boot into a recovery mode when it doesn't boot up properly 3 times in a row.

You should see Automatic Repair start upon the third time after shutting down your computer and rebooting. Let Automatic Repair start and it probably won't be able to do anything, however, you will get an option to restart or choose Advanced options. Click on Advanced options.

    1. Click on Troubleshoot.
    2. Click on Advanced Options.
    3. Click on System Restore

In the Restore system files and setting box, select Next. Select the restore point that you want to use in the list of results, and then select Scan for affected programs. **(If you don’t see the restore point that you want to use, select the "Show more restore points" check box to see more restore points) *. You'll see a list of items that will be deleted if you select this restore point. Make sure you select a restore point to before this problem began. If you're OK with the deletions, select Close> Next > Finish.

Yes, we really need to know what laptop you have to go any farther. There have been a lot of Swift models over the years. Can you take a picture of the error message? Knowing where it happens during the boot process will help a lot.

I have the same error code on my Acer Aspire A715. I had technician checked and he suspected there was a problem with the motherboard. I stuck at the logo Acer and couldn't get in Recovery mode. Do I need to check the motherboard?

@Kluan you would be better served to start your own thread. On this one we never even found out what computer they had, so it's unlikely to be the same issue as yours. Use the Ask a Question button to start a new thread for your issue. Include the full model number off the sticker than has your serial number, or the first ten digits of your serial number. Describe what is happening with your system and what you have done so far to try and fix it. At first glance it looks like an issue with the EFI.
