Problem- the backlight does not work.

Hasn't really bothered me until now as I've only used the device in daylight however using it at night recently showed this to be an issue and it seems to have been a problem for many users over the years. Tried updating the BIOS from v2.03 to v2.05however there's no change.

Has anyone managed to fix the backlight on their device? If so how is it done?

In this day and age is it too much to ask that a device costing a goodly amount of money be properly supported by the manufacturer? This unit is supposed to have a backlight yet it does not. I find this extremely unsatisfactory. My previous laptop was an Acer E1-571G and it did a faultless job over several years and was largely the reason I bought another Acer. Why is this one failing so miserably in it's task?

Maybe you need to toggle the backlight on or increase the brightness. Looking at the user manual the following keystrokes adjust the backlight:

    Fn+U = decrease backlight brightness

    Fn+I = increase backlight brightness

    Fn+U+I = toggle backlight on/off

The keyboard backlit on your model is handled by a small daughter board connected to the motherboard by a cable. Your issue might be the small board, the cable or the motherboard. Here's an image of the area:

Try reseating the cable to get rid of any accumulated corrosion.

Backlight now works, Not sure what exactly I did but it does now function. Only stays on for a short while before turning itself off though and there's no setting in BIOS that governs this. Have to press a key before it reactivates which is fairly annoying. Thinking of selling it and buying a small Dell because at least I know they work properly.

Yeah that's pretty typical for most Acer models. The backlight turns itself off after 30 seconds to save power even when not on battery. Some models allow that to be changed in the BIOS but I think those are in the minority.
