My Swift 3 doesn't recognise my Dell U2412M monitor

I have just bought a Acer Swift 3 laptop. When I try to connect it to my Dell U2412M monitor (VGA to HDMI), it is not recognising it. The Dell monitor works with my Lenovo. I've already tried to 'detect' the external monitor, but that hasn't worked.

Can someone give me some advice on how to adjust my settings please? I'm not very tech savvy, so please feel free to speak to me like you would a small child.

Thank you.

Sorry, this won't work with a passive HDMI-2-VGA or DP port form factor adapter. This is because the Acer's HDMI signal output port doesn't also natively support VGA or DP signal outputs like your Lenovo apparently does. For the Acer, you'd need an active HDMI-2-VGA/DP or an active USB-2-VGA/DP signal converter. Signal converters usually don't support very fast refresh rates so would be unsuitable for most gaming. You'd probably e much better off replacing the 10-year-old monitor technology.
