Hi,

since I've had this laptop I've had problems with the fans. They are too loud. But I have worked out that the fans get much louder when I plug the laptop in. On battery the fans are MUCH quieter and are at the level that I would expect from this laptop.

What could be causing this?

Thanks for any help.

    Good news!

After 3 months of trying, I’ve finally fixed this problem.

The issue was, while plugged in, I had the laptop set to balanced instead of ‘power saver’. Now, it’s in power saver mode the laptop does not run anywhere near as hot and thus the fans stay quiet!

Now, you might be saying to yourself that sounds an easy fix! And it should have been.

The reason that this was so difficult solve was that for some reason the ‘power saver’ option does not normally appear on this laptop. To get it to appear, I had to enter safe mode and then change from balanced to power saver there.

Thanks for help given in this thread.

  • Who controls the fans, is the bios. In that case, I would first try to check which bios version is installed on your computer.

Also the charging process generates a bit more heat than when running on battery. That heat can cause the fans to run faster. Here is the table that shows the normal activity for the fan:

    An update:

This problem still persists. I was advised to download HWMonitor. This shows the problem clearly.

This first image shows the temps when the laptop is not plugged in.

As soon as I plug the laptop in the temps begin to rise across the board. This second image was taken two mins after the laptop was plugged in.

So, it obvious the fans are spinning because the laptop is getting much hotter when plugged in.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

    Thank you.

  • How long ago did you buy the laptop? You may need to apply new thermal paste and clean the fans.

    Tinkerer

I have the same issue with Aspire 514-54, i3 gen 11, with Ram of 16.

Go to control panel and choose power option, in your chosen plan whether its Acer Plan or Balance Plan, select change plan setting and go to advance setting, now check on your PCI Express: Link State Power Management, here in plugged in mode if you do not want your fan work with higher speed (high noise) select maximum power saving.

Selecting moderate power setting or off will make the Fan run faster adjusting to your motherboard and CPU load during plugged in.

So, I guess Acer motherboard framework is not as good as other brand motherboard such as Asus, HP or Lenovo, and from my experience AMD's CPU works cooler than Intel's CPU nowadays.
