FPS drops despite fairly ok temperatures5 model AN515-58-53F4

hello I have an Acer nitro 5 model AN515-58-53F4 unfortunately, I feel a decline in FPS and stuttering on it in more processor games. I always set the FPS in games to 165, which is as much as my matrix has Hz, if the FPS drops by one frame, it causes a millisecond stuttering This happens more in e sports games than in games that require both a graphics card and a processor.The temperature of the graphics card can reach 83 degrees maximum, but most often it is around 75 degrees. The processor can go to 94 degrees, but usually 80.90 degrees.

I sent the laptop to Acer but unfortunately they did not detect anything in it and said that the laptop is fully functional, only what they did was replace the thermal paste.The second time I wrote to them, they wrote that I should send my laptop back to them, but I didn't do it anymore because it would be completely pointless.

The steps I took was :

Disabling Intel turbo boost

Bios update

Windows update

Updating the graphics card drivers.

I hope that I will get better help from you than from Acer himself, who does not even want to help, they only write to send a laptop to them immediately.

Try raising the laptop about an inch above a hard surface with coolboost enabled to promote air flow. Try not to block the intake and exhaust vents on the bottom. If it was mine, I'd be more concerned with the peak temps because they last long enough for the monitors to see. 83*C is near enough the GPU's 86*C red line that there are likely short-lived excursions into forbidden territory. Too short for the monitor to catch. But not too short for the GPU to react & repeatedly throttle to try to keep the temps under the red line. 94*C is right at the CPU red line so any excursions above that will likely cause similar reactions.

hello @JackE thank you for the answer, the temperature is actually lower, but it does not completely solve my problem. playing a game more processor maximum temperature which I observed is 87 degrees and here there is probably no thermal throttling .

This is OK if the integrated GPU is being used. But is too high if the separate discrete GPU is being used. So it depends on the game. Some games might use the integrated GPU where 87*C is OK. But other games might use the separate discrete GPU where 87*C is too high.

I actually have high temperatures and some fps drops (not too much to annoy me though)

I even undervolted, and saw 85°C GPU and 75°C which GPU is still pretty hot!

After all the basic recommendations like raising your laptop and not to block it's air vents and using a coolpad, i would suggest:

Try turning cool-boost ON. i have litteraly no idea why there's even a turn off switch for this. Laptop gets pretty hot even with cool-boost open.

Try undervolting. you'll get -10°C on CPU and a little on GPU depending on your situation.

And also, double check for dust and thermal repasting.

I come with the wrong information, unfortunately, none of the information mentioned helped me completely. I do not have the coolboost option in my model, neither in the quickacces application nor in nitrosense, I also did undervolting the graphics card, it did not bring any benefits. There are still some ways to avoid t drops in fps or unfortunately I will have to deal with it.

This model might've been advertised as having CoolBoost so it should have NitroSense installed. If not, I expect this will soon appear on the Acer application downloads for this model.

@JackE thanks for the information. I also noticed a strange thing why when playing a small demanding game, Hwinfo detects thermal throttling of the processor at about 62 degrees.

Undervolting CPU + coolpad brings at least 15°C of cooling the CPU down for me. which can help GPU cooling down and so...

Coolboost should have a option, i have no idea why you don't have but you should look it up in drivers and apps.

There are 2 reasons for fps drops:

1) Bad configed game, or too many background apps. which i see you have Bluestacks and that would mess with performance.

2) Thermal or power throttling, which i described in two recent posts.

I prefer using Throttlestop app for better CPU temps info and throttling moments.

Like other benchmarking freeware, results can sometimes be inaccurate or worth as much as you pay for them 🙂
