I can only use the laptop if plugged into AC power.

inhave had this laptop for close to two years, and minus the fan bearings dying I’ve had no issues.

battery reset hasn’t helped. Do I need to buy a new one?

    Try to reset the battery.

Power off the machine and disconnect everything from the machine. Check whether there is a small pinhole on the underside of the machine. Not all models have a pinhole. If pinhole is present, press into the hole for 5 s with a bent paper clip without a sheath. Then press the on/off switch continuously for 20 s and ignore intermittent restarts of the machine. If pinhole is not present, press the on/off switch continuously for 20 s and ignore intermittent restarts of the machine. Release the button and wait for 15-30 minutes. Reconnect the laptop to the power supply and wait for the full battery indication (blue) light. Then turn it on normally.

Download hwinfo and have a look at the wear level of your battery at the left side of the smart battery menu.
