ACER Swift-X SFX14-41G Shadowplay desktop capture no longer working after driver reinstall

Hi all,

I recently run into an issue where Shadowplay desktop capture no longer works after I reinstalled the Nvidia graphics drivers (From ACER product support page). It used to work fine, but due to Nvidia messing up the Shadowplay's functionality to record DSR above 1080P after a certain update, I decided to rollback to the older driver version. But after doing a clean install with the old drivers, I get prompted with "A supported game is required to use this feature" whenever I press the record button. I tried going into the overlay to adjust the privacy setting the menu option just isn't there at all. I've already set the preferred graphics processor to use the Nvidia GPU on Nvidia control panel, rebooted, and it still doesn't work.

I've attached some of the images for issues and actions I described on this post.

I mostly prefer using Shadowplay for recording over alternatives like OBS. Is there any way to fix this issue?

Thanks in advanced!

What nvidia problem were you trying to fix by installing the updated OEM nvidia driver/utility?

I'm trying to get Nvidia's shadowplay desktop capture working again. It used to work but now with the new drivers it just keeps prompting me "Game not supported"

Let me ask the question differently. If shadowplay worked with the old drivers, why did you decide to update to the new drivers?

That doesn't really matter. He's done the update to the Nvidia drivers and the function isn't working. My guess is they changed something in their defaults, but really the only way to find out is to contact Nvidia support.

The only reason I only updated the drivers was due to compatibility issues, I wasn't aware that shadowplay DSR recording was bugged until its too late.

I'm actually looking for the older drivers to rollback to. I still have a backup image of the SSD during its clean/factory state though, but I don't know where to look for the old drivers from there.

    What compatibility issues?

As far as the SSD image, that's usually used to restore the whole system to where it was when you created the image, not individual drivers.

You may still have the nvidia rollback option in Device Manager, by right clicking on the nvidia driver in the Display Adapters folder. If not, you still might have an automatic Control Panel restore point from the time you installed the update if it was only a few weeks ago.

Yes but you also said the only reason you tried updating the drivers in the first place was due to compatibility issues? What compatibility issues?

Console emulators. Just that the newer drivers worked better with it.

Please post a screenshot of Task Manager Startup tab if possible.

Apologies for the delay here's the startup tab.

I also included the processes tab upon startup just in case.

Did you rollback to the old driver in Device Manager or did you use the restore point option to reverse the new driver?

As far as Startup is concerned, I know Edge & OneDrive can cause issues when loaded on startup. Not sure why the other 6 are enabled. Perhaps you can try disabling them and re-enabling Steam, reboot to see what happens.

I've disabled the startup programs and enabled steam and restarted, still isn't recording.

Neither, both options are not available unfortunately.

At this point, you seem to have two options. Both rather drastic. Either use the backup image you made, or the factory OEM image on the hidden Acer OEM reset partition. There's no documented way of picking out just one original driver from the images. So either is lot of work. Or if you haven't done so already, register and post the issue to one of the nvidia users forums. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/forums/

Alright, thanks for helping out on this!

I'll post this issue on Nvidia's user forums.

If possible, please let us know if it gets fixed without a reset. Thanks.
