Problem upgrading RAM on Acer Aspire One D255E

I have an Acer Aspire One D255E-N55Dkk with S/N:LUSEV********* and SNID: 1031********. It is equipped with an Intel Atom N550 1.50 GHz and 1GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM. When I try to upgrade it to 2GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM it will not boot, neither to BIOS nor to the operating system, Windows 10. When I put the 1GB RAM back it boots without any problems.

I have already upgraded an Acer Aspire one 255-2Dkk with an Intel Atom N450 to 2GB without any problem. Any suggestions on why the D255E will not upgrade (I have tried with 3 different SODIMMs, all DDR3 1333MHz)?

Are the BIOS versions the same in the 450 & 550?

No. The 450 is V3.10 (DDR2) and the 550 is V3.13 (DDR3). Both are VGA BIOS Intel 2001.

Replace the 1GB sodimm in the 550. Then go to crucial.com  and run its scanner on the 550.

Scan done. "Your computer's currently installed memory: 1GB, Speed: 667, Manufacturer: 000..., Product number: 000...

We do not have compatible memory upgrades for your system at this time"

Which I find very strange since the SODIMM says DDR3 10600 1GB.

Looking at the Task Manager under Performance and Memory it says SODIMM DDR3 667MHz 1GB.

VikarieD270 my suggestion to you is this, if your new 2GB RAM does not match the exact specs with your Aspire One D255E OEM ram which should be the "GDDR3-1333MHz-1GB-128MX8-1.5V-EP" (GU672203EP0200 GDDR3-1333 1GB 128MX8 1.5V EP see caption below) then it won't work,

Btw, I speak from personal experience as I’ve done this upgrade and fitted a 2GB - GDDR3-1333MHz RAM and it worked 100%. Your Aspire One D255E with its Intel Atom N455/1.66GHz should run 2GB at DDR2/3 and its CPU's integrated GMA 3150 Graphics Processor Dynamic Video is just not good enough for today’s graphics resolution requirements that Win-10 requires at 1024x700 minimum and this graphics runs lower than that so the One laptops at needs its resolution need a mod by a software called "HotKey Resolution Changer". IMO (as I've found out after spending useless $$$'s) its a waste of time/money to use and/or to try to upgrade this 10.1" laptop as its unfortunately obsolete.

Just for your reference, my Acer One Happy 2 specs are; Intel Atom N570 and the integrated Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150 and GDDR3-1333MHz 2GB RAM, that came OEM with Win-7 Starter Edition and a basic offshoot of Android, I upgraded it to Win-10 Home, a 2.5” SSD Samsung 250GB 850 EVO and I even upgraded its Wi-Fi only wireless AR5B95 card to a new Qualcomm Atheros AR9462-AR5B22 Wi-Fi/BT and it still was as slow as a snail and unworkable/unusable as the graphics resolutions are not good enough for today’s needs and slow as a snail. Good luck with whatever you want to do with this laptop but that is what I experienced with a newer version of your Aspire One D255E.

OEM Aspire One Happy 2 1GB RAM fitted by Acer.

The PC3 10600 is just another designation for DDR3 1333MHz RAM.

The only 2GB DDR3 sodimm that has been certified to work on this model is  HYNIX model HMT325S6BFR8C-H9 or ACER part no. KN.2GB0G.018. This is a very early DDR3 mainboard that may be sensitive to the sodimm installed. What brand model DDR3 sodimms have you tried  so far?

    Samsung M471B5673FH0-CH9 (2GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600S-09-10-F2) and HP P/N: HPMJ-464140-642

What can be the reason that the crucial.com scan and Task Manager both say 667MHz when the SODIMM is 10600/1333?

The Service Guide states that N450 units support only DDR2, the N550 only DDR3, in both cases only 667MHz memory. The FRU list, however, shows 667, 800 and 1333MHz memory, DDR2 667 & 800, DDR3 1333 in all cases. Unless the 2GB DDR3 you are trying is actually DDR3L I don't see why is wouldn't work.

    >>> Task Manager both say 667MHz when the SODIMM is 10600/1333?>>>

667MHz is mainboard RAM  buss speed.

Sodimm RAM is DoubleDataRateRAM (DDR RAM). So it acts like twice 667MHz or 1333MHz (2 x 667MHz) in a 667MHz mainboard buss.

Where can I find those service guides and the FRU list? As far as I can tell, neither of the 2GB DDR3 i tried were DDR3L.

I was not aware that the Task Manager stated the speed of the RAM bus.

So before I start looking around for a HYNIX model HMT325S6BFR8C-H9, is there anything else I can try?

Apart from the SODIMMs that I have already tried, I have the following:
    DDR3 1333MHz 4GB
    DDR3 1600MHz 4GB
    DDR3 1066 MHz 2GB

Any point in trying any of these?

Anything else I can check, test, scan, ... ?

If you can match the exact specifications with another brand, then it night  work. You might also want to consider a refurbished Hynix sodimm since this is also a very early DDR3 sodimm that was used in many low end budget netbooks by many manufacturers such as Dell, Asus, HP and Acer. It is not readily available today and the reason why most are refurbished but very inexpensive.

Of the ones you have listed, I wouldn't even bother with the 4GB modules. The 2GB might work, but only if it's underrated and can actually run at 1333 even though it's 1066. Note that a lot of advertisements on these memory modules state just PC3-10600 in SO-DIMM rather than PC3-10600S. The 'S' is just another way to say it's a SO-DIMM package...

Please post a phone photo of your 2GB sodimm lable so that we can compare it with this Hynix 2GB sodimm label.
