Greetings,

Installed an SSD drive in the second bay.
BIOS is AHCI mode for SATA.

In BIOS there the Second designated as HDD1 has nothing showing.
SATA port 1 is enabled in BIOS.

The cable is connected on both ends one to the drive the other to the motherboard right next to the USB.

Reflashed BIOS to latest, Load Defaults and rebooted.
Still no drive detected.

Is there is fix for this?

BIOS IS v1.22 which says, to correct second HDD not showing up. Seems this is not working.

What is the fix?

My suggestion to you is to first, open the back cover and unplug the battery and also unplug the cmos battery and leave it disconnected for 5 min, replug battery and cmos battery and reboot, see if that works?

If that doesn’t work? Then try to format the 2.5" SSD first externally with a SATA to USB 3.0 cable into either GUID (GPT) format or MBR and then connect the SSD and see if it works? As my mechanical 2TB works in GUID (GPT) format perfectly and is recognised but, I can only use this drive as an external drive.

I know that you said that “The cable is connected on both ends one to the drive the other to the motherboard right next to the USB.” but still make sure that the SATA plug and flat cable is connected to the motherboard properly and you haven’t dislodged that connection at the motherboard? As these cables/plugs are very delicate connection and any slight pull on the cable, could dislodged the connection.

Btw I've got the same problem with an AN515-56 brand new laptop that I can’t connect a brand new 2.5” mechanical 2TB drive to this laptop, as the flat SATA plug/cable and connection to the motherboard plug is impossible to connect to as I even got a new cable and connected it but the motherboard 2nd HDD plug is impossible to get it connected, it even stops the laptop from booting when this SATA Plug/cable is fully inserted into the Motherboard, so this is a common problem and there is no solutions if all the above don’t work and you will have to get a case and use this 2.5” SSD as an external drive like I have. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

  • This could also be a sata cable failure. It would be interesting to test with another sata cable! @StevenGen Have you tried disabling vmd controller in bios?

Steve thanks yes it is rather strange to have this happen. I had to buy a new data cable which arrived Monday and installed.
it’s an Samsung 750 EVO SSD which I pulled out of another laptop. My other laptop has no problems seeing this drive.

it may be a faulty port or faulty or the cable connections don’t mesh on the motherboard
    pins.

It is small requires a scope to see it

also no way to test the port beforehand.

for the newer design nitros I think the port is next to battery on that edge and just flip up the lever to insert the small connector.

I had last years nitro which I installed a second M.2 and a SSD had no problems.

it was set with Intel rst as the controller

Thanks egy I called the Place that sent me the kit and they will look into it. It maybe a misaligned cable end the pins might not be touching. Hard to tell

Hi egydiocoelho thanks for your solution, I've already bought a brand new SATA cable and plug but I should have thought of "disabling VMD controller in bios" as that is a known issue that “NVMe SSD PCI device will be invisible when Intel VMD is enabled” and is probably the cause of this issue. Thanks.

@egydiocoelho where is the Intel VMD Controller in BiOS on these Nitro's and what Gen Intel's have them?

    Thanks

I plugged in a HDD and no show. Possible cable failure

    Fixed !!

    Found the problem.

Brushes on the motherboard port had some debris.

    Working good now.

This is 7th Gen Intel no VMD controller as I found @egydiocoelho previous post about this controller for the looks like Comet lake Tiger Lake series has them.

I had 11th Tiger Lake no problems with 3 drives connected.
  • Only 11th and 12th Gen processors contain the VMD CONTROLLER feature!
