I have an Acer SP513-52N.  I will be logged into my laptop and leave it for a 1/2 hour or more. When I return, I press the power button and the keyboard lights up, but the screen remains blank. If this happens, I can only recover by holding the power button down for 5+ seconds to shut it down and then power it back on.

The laptop is ~5 year old.  Problem started in the past year.  It randomly happens.  Maybe every third or fourth time I leave my laptop for an extended period of time.  I have seen it happen when the computer is on battery and plugged in.

Thoughts?

That should not be happening when or whenever you leave the laptop unattended for ½ an hour, as the screen should turn off first and after a while the laptop should go into sleep mode if you set the power setting that way? Try to reset the power setting of the laptop to default settings (I presume that you are using Win-10 Pro?) that this laptop came OEM with?

As Win-11 is has different power settings and I’ve set my AN515-56 to never turn the screen off and whenever I finish with my laptop I either turn it off or put into sleep mode by going to Start > Power > Sleep as in Win-11 the sleep mode is activated after a set time and when its in sleep mode you need to press the power key and the laptop reboots completely with the Acer logo etc etc so see if that resets and fixes this problem?: Otherwise it could be a battery problem or an internal power circuitry issue that needs fixing.

Thanks for your reply.  I am running Win10 Pro 21H2.  I changed my power settings back to the default.  I also noted when doing this that there is only one plan (balanced).  The standard Win10 three built-in power plans are Balanced, Power Saver and High Performance.

I will let this run on the balanced plan and see if that resolves the problem.  If not I will investigate restoring the other two plans and try them.

I found this link describing how to restore the other two power options.

This often also happens when you have an app or driver that is not playing well with others. Boot in safe mode with networking and run long enough to cause the issue. If it doesn't happen then try using msconfig to enable and disable services until you can pin it down to just one.
