Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-57) MX500 2.5'' SATA ssd not recognized as a bootable device?

Hi, I'm trying to install a 2TB Crucial MX500 2.5'' SATA ssd on my Acer AN515-57 Laptop. I do not have a USB to SATA cable for cloning my data from my original ssd to this new ssd I bought. My Bios version is 1.16 I think.
My first question, is there a limit to how much storage I can have on this device? I have an m.2 ssd with 526GBs installed already that runs fine without my MX500, but when I connect the MX500 with or without my other ssd, the computer turns on but doesn't even show the Acer logo and loading screen. I have no idea why it does this.

If I had to guess, my first problem probably comes from the laptop not actually recognizing this ssd.
My second question, is there a way to change the SATA mode on this model? Perhaps it is related to a different problem, I really don't know for sure, pls send help.

@JacquesLettuce Firstly, remove the Crucial SSD first so that the laptop can boot. Then open the msconfig, boot tab, and enable the safe mode. Go to the BIOS, press Ctrl+S in the main tab and disable the VMD controller. Save and exit. Once you have booted into safe mode, restart and again to go into normal Windows state. Turn the laptop off and then try to install the SSD again.

@AnhEZ28 Holy ***** thank you! I never knew how to find the VMD Controller, and now it's finally on a normal desktop! I think I can figure out why it's not recognizing the ssd on my own. Thanks a Bunch!

  • The mx500 ssd has some compatibility issue with the intel vmd controller. That's why you disable this feature in the bios.

Make sure the SSD is connected well. Go to Device Manager. If it is not there, run a Memory Diagnosis. Then go to Device Manager and you should see it. Go to Disk Management and you will see the disk but not allocated. Click it and select New Volume, and follow the instructions (mostly just Next). Voila.

    Good day,

In case this may help someone in future; I had practically the same issue.

I uninstalled the Storage Executive and updated the bios from V1.18 to V1.19 and it started booting fine with the MX500 installed internally.

Uninstalling Storage Executive may not be necessary.

    Kind regards.
