Response time of new machine Aspire 3 314-35-P3DE

Hello, bought an Aspire 3 for use when I'm travelling. Very minimal use and since new I've only updated to MS11, and changed the Anti-virus to Windows and installed LibreOffice 7.2 on the machine. There are no other progs apps/documents on the Aspire and my WiFi is working correctly. Now, on pressing the 'start' button, the laptop takes 3 minutes to display the time and then a further 45 seconds to display the login screen requesting my PIN. From successfully accepting my PIN there is then a further 5 minutes approximately before I am able to enter anything meaningful in the Microsoft Edge search. Generally once the MS Edge screen opens it frequently advises that 'Edge is not Responding'. Each and every 'mouse' / trackpad request hangs for a period before responding. Have contacted service on 2 occasions and no response. Thank you.

Hi,
Could you please post the full model name of the laptop, like A315-xx, do you have the OS in the 2.5" HDD?

Hi Brummyfan2. The model is a 314-35-P3DE. The original OS (Windows 10) was factory installed and I presume the re-install of 11 is on the HDD. I will fire it up which will take 10 minutes and let you know for definite. Thank you for your response.

Hi,
It's the spinner HDD causing this sluggishness in your laptop, you can install a M.2 NVMe SSD or a M.2 SATA SSD, migrate the HDD to the new M.2 SSD and use it as the boot drive, you can use the HDD for storage.

Hi again Brummyfan2, as expected all MS O/S files are on the original C drive 426 GB free of the original 464 GB.

Yes, you have a 500GB spinner HDD in your model, you need to get a M.2 SATA SSD to boost the speed of the laptop.

It can be made somewhat faster by disabling Fast Startup, which increases startup time with HDDs. If there's lots of data on the disk, when Fast Startup hibernates the kernel, that's pushed to the inner tracks near the spindle. Not only do the inner tracks move slower under the actuator arm, but they are smaller capacity rings, so the same amount of data is spread across more tracks requiring more actuation. It is much faster to start fresh from permanent system files that were originally established near the outer beginning of the fast platter.

If the HDD uses SMR, Fast Startup will also cause the computer to be slower for some time after startup. SMR mainly slows writing, so reading permanent system files isn't affected as much. SMR disks direct writes to CMR cache, which is eventually transported to SMR. With Fast Startup kernel hibernation, the disk spins down immediately after finishing writing, so data remains in the CMR cache. When the computer starts again, the HDD is busy moving the hibernation data to the SMR while Windows is trying to use it.

Windows 11 removed the ability to disable Fast Startup from the Control Panel. To disable Fast Startup, open Command Prompt as administrator and paste the following line exactly without modification:
