Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help. To be exact, I have a Nitro AN515-42. AMD Ryzen 2500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx. I got this laptop years ago and it has never worked good. Laggy, buggy, slow... I took it into Best Buy shortly after getting it and they basically told me its normal and they wouldn't refund it.

I've updated it and had no change. I've factory restored it and had no change. Simple things like right-click and going into folders takes way too long to load, and I often have to end task things. My old 12 year imac runs leagues better. I'm not even playing games on this, it struggles to do the most basic things! Does this laptop just suck, pure and simple? If there is something I can download, or something I can tweak in the settings that can help, that would be awesome.

Try uninstalling, not just disabling, any non- mi cros oft antimalware like n or ton or m c af ee which are usually bundled. They are no longer  needed for most users. They can really slow things up. Also sounds like you have a pretty slow 2.5" HDD installed. Switching to a 2.5" SSD can really wake things up and SSD prices with high capacities are very good right now

Just as an addition to the above, there could be something wrong with your OS, your boot drive and/or not enough RAM, so do a clean install of windows 10 as this laptop is NOT compatible with Win-11. Also, you should not be having problems like you are having even though your AN515-42 with the 2500U CPU and the Vega 8 GPU is not the fastest laptop around or even and compared to the same laptop tested on UserBenchmark (download and do the test to compare yours) of one of the top AN515-42 with the GTX-1660Ti GPU that has an M.2 - WDC WDS480G2G0B-00EPW0 512GB - 2.5” spinner HDD WD WD10SPZX-00HKTT0 1TB – 16GB TEAMGROUP-SD4-2400 Kingston 9905712-016.A00G 24GB RAM as this seems to be a good setup.

I don't know what you have upgraded when you say "I've updated it and had no change"? But if you look at your AN515-42 with the 2500U and the Vega 8 graphics the UserBenchmark tests are not really fast even the fastest of these AN515-42"s, have a look here at a similar UserBenchmark AN515-42 test like your AN515-42 with the 2500U, Vega 8 as the results are classified as a "Raft" while the top test is classified as a "Yacht". So I would upgrade the memory to at least 16GB DDR4 2400MHz but run the Crucial System Scanner as you might be able to run the DDR4-2666Mhz type RAM and upgrade the M.2 drive to the M.2 - WDC WDS480G2G0B-00EPW0 512GB type like in the test. Also and if the TRIM  is enabled in Windows for your SSD it will improve performance of your SSD hard drive.

Thanks Jack! I’ll try deleting Norton.

Thanks for the info Steven. I meant I updated Windows as much as it let me. I did a clean install of it a while back, and I didn’t notice any change. Sometimes it runs decent, but it’s never smooth. And sometimes at random things like opening a folder or right-clicking take way longer than they should to load. I also have 16 GB of ram ( 14.9 usable ) if that helps.

    Hi @JanStandard,

Here are few steps that I used to boost gaming performance on Acer nitro 5.
    1. Turn on Radeon boost for both gpu, Radeon boost is new inbuild option comes with and settings. ...
    2. Download and install nitrosense, run fan at Max speed. ...
    3. Optimize power settings, set switchable graphics to maximize performance while plugged in.
