Looking for recommendations / suggestions on a hybrid gaming / work laptop

Wondering if anyone could help me filter down the ridiculous array of option available. I'll be using this laptop about 50% for work and 50% for gaming. For work, I need the RAM since I'll be running SQL Server, SSMS, and several copies of Visual Studio simultaneously. For gaming, my requirements are bit less strict, I mostly do single-player games, and I don't really mind having to turn video settings down if need be. I don't have a huge number of specific requirements, but I'll list the ones I do have:

  • PC only (no mac/linux/etc)
  • Needs to have a webcam
  • Minimum 16GB of RAM
  • Maximum $2,000 CAD

if you have any other recommendations, they're definitely appreciated.

Are you looking for a portable laptop, or a replacement?

They come in three main buckets for their gaming line:
Helios - desktop replacements , heavier but faster
Nitro - mid range, balance performance and weight, battery is eh
Triton - lighter, better battery, slower due to thermals

Then you also have things like the travel mate which may annoy you with bad graphics, Chromebook + AWS workspace + gforce now, which would run you a monthly fee, or the switch which are ultra portable but ehh not for you

Then lastly which I think may be a good match is the Concept line, they are businessy laptops, with things like a 3050 in them and a 16:10 screen , so I would either say look at the concept line, or triton 400se / 500se

A buget of CAD $2,000 is more than enough. You can just get a decent pre-built game PC from Neggegg (ABS brand) at about USD $900-$1300.

A self build with 11th gen Intel CPU, say i5-11400 ( USD $150-$200), 500 GB gen 4 (not gen 3) M.2 NVMe SSD (USD $100), GTX 1050-ti grpahics card (USD $280), 16 GB DDR4 XMP 2.0 RAM 3600 MHz (USD $70), a 1080p web cam (USD $20-$40), 500W PSU (USD $40-60), PC case (USD $40-$80), PCIe 4.0 motherboard B560 chipset (USD $80-$140), decent CPU cooler for the hot running 11th gen CPU (USD $20-$40).

I build one without the cost of PC case, CPU cooler, graphics card and PSU for about USD $650 (before tax) last year, and the on-board graphics( i5-11500 CPU's UHD 750) is enough for decent gaming (as long as not in the highest setting and not the most demanding games).

For CAD $2,000 I think you can build a PC with PCIe 5.0 motherboard with Z690 chipset, 12th gen Intel CPU, using DDR5 XMP 3.0 RAM, a whole generation more advanced.

Disregard my earlier post. You are after laptop, not desktops. I guess I should go to bed now.

Still, CAD $2,000 is more than enough for a decent Nitro series of laptop that will suit your needs.
