Hello all,

has someone already tried to install Ubuntu 20.04 on an Aspire A515-45 (AMD)?

Does anyone have experience how the hardware (fancontrol, ..) is supported? I would like to leave the Windows on the machine and have Ubuntu as main operating system. I understand the nb has also a second slot for a 2.5 SSD - would it be possible to use that for Linux and change the boot order in the Bios?

Thanks!

Fan control is usually not supported in the newer A5 series even by 3rd party Windows software.

Many ubuntu 20.04 distros have issues with identifying HDD1 or sdb as a boot drive. This is usually caused by the trusted EFI files including grubx64.efi  are locked onto EFI partition of HDD0 or sda in the BIOS.

Since you should currently have at least a 512GB storage capacity, you might want to try to shrink your existing Windows volume setup to make about a third of the drive unallocated space for ubuntu.  Then trying to dual boot with standard Mint Cinnamon 20.3 or the Edge version if you have problems. Mint installations are arguably the most polished of the Ubuntu distros.  My laptops are all dual boot Cinnamon 19.3 and 20.3
