Thats pretty much it...
Where can I get an Enduro N3 from, on this side of the world?  Looks like I can buy one from Italy or the UK via eBay?  Surely there are suppliers in Australia though?

DesertCart can probably get you one in less than a week for about $2150aud. The Acer store might also be able to do it for a bit more.

Thanks for that. I've never heard of DesertCart.  They have the I7-11 model of the Enduro on the Acer Store.  Doesn't have a serial port though.

Sure it does. USB ports are universal serial ports. They can be used with any legacy serial ports like RS232 & RS432. All you need are inexpensive USB-to-RS232 D connector adapters. Hardly any newer consumer grade PCs come with the old D connector ports any more. DesertCart should be able to get you either the urban eun314-51w or regular en314-51w, the latter of which should have a better screen.

Unfortunately a million dollar UAV is hanging off a modem connected to it and we have had too many issues with USB -> serial devices.  They aren't stable enough.

Hmm tried to order from DesertCat and they cancelled the order.  No shipping to Au.

I'm not sure what USB serial devices you've had instabilities with,  but i can tell you the passive passthru USB-to-RS232 or RS432 com port adapters are pretty bulletproof. I'm a consultant for toolmakers and the USB protocols work flawlessly coupled to costly but 20yo machine tools still using these older physical com1, com2, com3 & com4 connections.

Sorry but if your application is so critically expensive if things go haywire, you probably shouldn't be relying on answers you get on a freebie users forum for consumer-grade or gaming-grade PCs.  You're probably not gonna find older D com form factor serial ports in a newer consumer-grade off-the-shelf laptop. HDMI, USBA & USBC, and maybe RJ45, displayport & ThunderBolt ports are about all you'll find these days unless special ordered. And even these physical serial forms rely on the universal serial mainboard bus for connectivity. Parallel, D-Com, VGA, and a few other port form factors have fallen by the wayside in laptop construction.

You might want to consider a desktop with PCIe bus expansion card capabilities that should offer more form factor flexibility & freedom from USBus  dependence in your application

I was looking for something other than a Panasonic Toughbook.  For a little variety.  I'll probably end up getting one of them though.

Get the “Acer Enduro EUN314A, Intel Core i7-11th Gen, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD" from Acer Australia as I’ve give you the reference to and get a HDMI to VGA adaptor so that you have a VGA port to connect to, I can’t see where your problem(s) are as JackE has explained everything to you so comprehensively!

It's a serial port I'm looking for, not a VGA or HDMI port

Yes, as far as I know, new ACER laptops were virtually devoid of an RS232 port when Win7 debuted. almost 13 years ago. Consumer laptop designers apparently decided that a USB port is where it's at. :)

It's typically something you still find in rugged laptops/tablets.  There's plenty of industrial/scientific devices around that still like a RS232 port.
