Hi friends,
Bought laptop in March 2020. Last night the touchscreen suddenly stopped working.
(Not as important to me, but the stylus pen and the tablet also seemed to stop working, tablet says "This device does not have touch capabilities.")
As mentioned above, I have an Acer Spin SP314-53N and Windows 10 Home. (See attached screenshot for my PC's About specs.)
Things I've tried:
1- All the google fu results for "My touchscreen stopped working".
2- First thing was to
restart the computer.
3- Then I tried to
Troubleshoot, and Additional Troubleshoot. But there was no troubleshoot option for touchscreens.
4- I checked for, and then
ran Windows Updates. Restarted computer again.
5- I opened the
device manager but was not able to find "(Human Interface Devices)
HID-Compliant touch screen", just touch pad. I found it after going to View -> Show Hidden Devices. If I recall correctly, Disable Device was grayed out. So was Rollback. Tried to Update Driver, search automatically for drivers, Best driver already installed.
So then I
Uninstalled the driver. And restarted the computer again.
Problem is, after the restart, the HID-Compliant
touch screen driver was nowhere to be found. It was missing from the Device Manager, AND the show hidden devices option. I can't find it anywhere. (See attached screenshot 2 of the Device manager)
6- I tried to
download from the MgmtEngine ME (Management Engine) Driver from the Acer drivers page
https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/7994?b=1(though honestly, it
didn't seem to work, because)
Normally I'm used to an .exe file and a wizard that walks me through stuff. I ran the Install.bat (and then later tried the Install.cmd) and nothing seemed to make a difference. HID-Compliant touch screen is
still not appearing in my Device Manager.
7- I also tried to Disable and Re-enable the USB Input Device (under the Human interface devices) as suggested by a post somewhere. I was able to do this for two, and then a third one had the options grayed out. And right now all of them are grayed out (and there's a lot more of them... my recollection is that there were three when I did it.)
At this point, I'm out of options. Pretty sure I've tried most of the things suggested by google results for
"My touchscreen stopped working".
and
"My Acer Spin (SP314-53N) touchscreen stopped working".
~
Interesting notes that may be helpful/relevant, even though I don't use these so much and don't care about them:
8- I tried to the stylus pen to see if it worked-- nope. I looked at the Device manager and realized that
HID-compliant pen is grayed out (hidden) (see attached screenshot 2 of the Device Manager),
device status is:
> Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)> To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.and the options to Roll back driver and Disable driver are both grayed out for the Stylus Pen. After losing the Touchscreen driver completely, I'm reluctant to uninstall the Pen, for fear that I won't find it again to reinstall. While I don't depend on the pen like I do the touchscreen, I use it for games sometimes and I last used the pen on the same day that I had touchscreen ability.
9- I also tried to see if the touchscreen would work while I was in
Tablet Mode. I've only used the tablet mode a handful of times. The tablet also doesn't seem to be working, when I go into Settings > System > Tablet > Change additional tablet settings, the top line says (in red) "
This device does not have touch capabilities."
Help please!
My computer specs
My Device Manager. Note that HID-Compliant TouchScreen is completely missing, even though I am in Show Hidden Devices View, and also note that HID-Compliant Pen is grayed out.
I'm posting this, and then I'm going to restart my computer, because Murphy's Law says that once you put your business out there, everything will magically sort itself out making you look dumb. Here's hoping!
with gratitude, me.
