Connecting to old projector by VGA

I have tried to connect my ACER to a VGA projector using several different HDMI - VGA adaptors but the laptop doesn't recognise the projector as a second display (I have successfully used the adaptors with other laptops). Do I need to do something in settings to fix this?

You need an active HDMI to VGA digital to analog signal converter, not a passive HDMI to VGA cable adapter. Google hdmi to vga signal converter for vendors who ship to your location.

Just to check: you connect the display device to the HDMI output on your laptop with everything turned on. Striking win-P does not shows video selection ?
I use these. For less than a sawbuck I always look or a separate audio output. This one also says "Active"
