Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying a new laptop:

Acer Swift 3 SF314-511-56TT

However, I want to be sure that this laptop is compatible with my current docking station (HP Elite USB-C DOCK G3). In short, are all usb-c thunderbolt connection ports compatible with eachother? I have googled this issue, but I can't find a straight answer as all laptop brands only recommend their own docking stations.

(Unfortunately I cannot change my docking station as I use it for my work laptop as well)

Many thanks in advance!

Kind regards,

A not so technical person

Your HP dock is a USB-C dock, so doesn't require any Thunderbolt features. TBT is actually a superset of the USB specs, and your Swift supports TBT4. So it will do everything a USB-C 3.1 gen 2 port does, plus some of the extra things that TBT allows. For instance you could plug an external GPU in, which USB-C by itself doesn't allow. It looks like the HP dock only requires USB-C 3.1 gen 1, so you are good to go. You will have to install the drivers for the dock, they are likely not going to appear magically when you plug it in.
