Aspire 5 CPU stuck at 0.2 GHz with a 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz

As the title says, the processor is stuck at 0.2GHz

I have run ThrottleStop and the the BD PROCHOT has been triggered.

If I use the ThrottleStop settings to turn "BD PROCHOT" off and the laptop is in Battery Life mode everything is fine and it is back to normal. But if the laptop is on Best Performance mode the clock speed jumps up to way above the 2.80GHz (over 4.50GHz at one point but at only a couple of % usage) but generally always over 3.00GHz. Setting "Disable Turbo" brings this down to just below the 2.80GHz.

This "fixes" the problem but is there an "official" fix to reset it as if it never happened?

We think the overheating was caused by the laptop being used on a bed without any sort of tray so basically all the air holes were blocked.

This post replaces the problem I thought it was. When looking at the resource graphics the CPU still had peaks and troughs, I just did not notice the 0.2GHz speed part so thought it was working fine.

My guess is a sensor is bawked / burned out, if you check hwinfo are there any "weird" readings of either 0c or -Xc numbers, or things which are obviusly not right such as around 100c or above. BD prochot is an external non CPU signal rather than one from inside the CPU

It could also be a popped capacitor on the motherbaord, it may be worth removing the bottom cover and then checking for anything which looks like its surrounded by black gunk or looking for any capacitors which have 'exploded' , usually happens around the charging/ power delivery circutry

Only want to do a reinstall as a last resort and was maybe hoping an update to Windows 11 would count as a reinstall.

Let me help you. You have updated your bios update which is trashing up cpu temp and I know that bcoz you are not alone suffering from the issue. Windows can't reinstall bios. Just pray that Acer ACTUALLY sees this

The BIOS date has obviously been updated at some point as it is dated after the laptop was bought but I only do the "current" updates that the system update does automatically or the option functionality / feature updates, never the additional / optional driver updates so any update was applied automatically.

There is an Insyde software - Firmware - 5.42.1.17 driver update done about mid October but it was not till at least the end of November that the going slow issue was seen.

The Aspire 5 is my partners laptop, My Swift 3 BIOS is Insyde Corp. V1.03, 01/09/2020 and there is a Insyde software - Firmware - 5.42.1.9 as an optional driver update.

I would try to reinstall windows first as it might be some bug in the operating system. If the issue continues to occur, what happens when you update the bios to version 1.20?
