I've had this issue for over a year now, but it still bugs me and I can't seem to find a solution. I bought a new nitro 5 AN515-54 with 8 GB RAM and some Linux distro preinstalled from the manufacturer. I actually immediately replaced it with Linux Mint and since I wanted to do a lot of photogrammetry on it, which requires a lot of memory, I bought 2 16GB RAM modules from the same store where I got the laptop. The store has a tool which can supposedly select the right memory for your laptop, so I went with what it recommended. But when I installed the cards and opened firefox to watch youtube, after a while, this happened:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meeulBNrUHY. It seems to be tied to tasks which involve high graphics utilization and the crashes happen more frequently when I use both modules at the same time. I tested them with memtest, but they seem to be ok. I also thought it might be a problem with the OS and there's a long thread on Linux Mint forum about this, where I unsuccessfully tried to find a remedy, if you want to check it out for better context:
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=347531&hilit=crazy+crash. But today I noticed, that the new modules, despite being
almost the same are actually of 2Rx16 type, whereas the old 8GB one, which doesn't crash is 1Rx8. I didn't realize they were dual rank, because the seller doesn't even list this parameter on their webstore... My OS, drivers and BIOS are up to date.
Long story short, my question is - does nitro 5 AN515-54 even support dual rank memory?
