A515-51-596K SSD Type / Upgrade?

I have run out of space on the stock 256gb HD. I am getting conflicting info on what drive is inside (m.2 vs 2.5" SSD) and some saying that a m.2 and 2.5" can be installed together. I also read something about a parts kit for the SSD install that comes from acer free of charge if you are in the USA. Can someone shed some light on this for me?

I am very happy with this laptop btw.

From the BIOS or running Crystal Disk Info or other programs you should be able to tell whether you have M.2 NVMe SSD. Unless you changed your boot drive to a slower drive, normally PC manufacturers will ship PCs with the fastest drive as the boot drive(M.2 NVMe SSD).

M.2 NVMe SSD and 2.5" SATA3 SSD can co-exist but make sure just one( normally the M.2 NVMe SSD) has the Windows on it to avoid potential problem.

For my Acer laptop ( different model from yours) has Win 10 on M.2 SSD, and Linux on the 2.5" SATA3 SSD.

Maybe the 2.5" SATA3 SSD mounting bracket and the ribbon cable were not shipped when you bought your laptop new. My A515-46-R14k came with the bracket and ribbon cable.

I do not have the part number for the cable. Wait a little bit, some Acer Aces may come up with the part number for you to order one.
Or you can type "A515-51-596K SSD upgrade" at the search field of the top in this page, some people may have the part number mentioned.

The ribbon cable is  most important. The mounting bracket? In my opinion, it is optional. A strong masking tape can affix the drive just fine.

can the m2 hard drive and a 2.5" SSD be installed at the same time?
I cant find if the ribbon cable has to plug into where the m2 drive currently is.

As I mentioned earlier, M.2 SSD and 2.5" SATA3 SSD can co-exist at the same time.
M.2 slots do not need cables for connection. Just insert the M.2 SSD to the slot and then use the M.2 3mm screw to hold the M.2 SSD in place.
Only the 2.5" SATA3 SSD will need the ribbon cable.

If you temporarily cannot find a M.2 3mm screw, just use a strong masking tape to hold it in place will do it, and get the screw later.

Order the parts if you are sure about the part numbers.

Worked out just fine. Used tape on the backside and the front to hold in place. A $13 bracket is plum silly.

Congrat! Some people probably think that my suggestion is too cheap.

Since a 2.5" SATA3 SSD is so light, that's why I'd made such suggestion.
