I have a new Aspire A517-52g. The display is not as sharp as I expected. The monitor is shown as 'Generic PnP Monitor' in Device Manager - should it be set to something more specific?

Right click a blank desktop space. Click display settings. What is the recommended resolution near the bottom of the right panel?

    1920 x 1080 - which it is set to.

Unless you get some USD $2000 laptop with 1440p or 4K resolution, I guess 1080p is the best resolution for the laptop now.

However, using an external monitor/TV of 4K resolution with the HDMI 2.0 port is possible.

I have not phrased my question clearly enough.

In the past when Device manager has shown something like 'Generic PnP Monitor' this has indicated that the system is not using the driver specific to the actual monitor installed but a generic driver. Whilst it may work adequately, it does not get the best out of the hardware. My question whether 'Generic PnP Monitor' is correct in this case or can I do better?

Yes, generic pnp monitor driver is usually correct for non-gaming laptops. Does it actual say  1920 x 1080 (Recommeded) in the settings? For example, my laptop is similar to your's with the generic pnp monitor driver installed. My display setting says 2160 x 1440 (Recommended). If I set it to 1920 x 1080, it doesn't look as good.
