Does anyone have instructions on how to upgrade the memory (or add a 2nd HDD)?  There's nothing for this model on the Acer web site (go.acer.com/HDDupgrade), and their support chat couldn't help either. They pointed me here instead. Can anyone help?

You can add up to a single 16GB DDR4 sodimm module 2666MHz or  faster for a total of 20GB or 24GB depending on if you have 4GB or 8GB permanent solder mainboard RAM. You can also add a 2.5" HDD or 2.5" SSD up to 2TB.

To access the RAM socket and HDD/SSD bay you must first remove 14 screws from the bottom cover and pry the bottom cover away using a plastic wedge like a credit card. Then unplug the battery pack and remove two screws to lift the battery pack out.

The sodimm RAM module simply pushes at a 45* angle into the RAM socket and then pushed down flat.

If you're in the US or Canada you can request a HDD or SSD installation kit at this link. If not, google search the part no. 50.A4VN2.003 for vendors who ship the flexible flat ribbon cable that connect the drive to the mainboard to your locatio. About $15usd. Instead of screws and brackets, you can also immobilize and protect the drive inside the case by using anti-static foam.

From the right pane here, under Acer Support Videos of the Assistance by Acer section, type in A517-52, you will see some videos on how to do it.
You may not find the exact same model number but after viewing a couple of the videos, you should have an idea what to do.

    General steps:

    For memory module...
Remove all screws at bottom of laptop.
Use old credit card to separate the bottom from the main chassis of laptop
    Disconnect the battery connector
Press power button a few times, to make sure no residue charge

Insert the memory module to the memory slot, make sure the clip is engaged to the module
If you do not need to do something else ( such as adding HDD/SS), connect back the battery
Put back the bottom and the screws

    For 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD...
Be sure the adapter and the connecting ribbon cable is ready, with the four mounting screws
Same steps, till you press the power buttons
Look for the slot to place the 2.5" drive and the connectors for the ribbon cable connector on the motherboard.
Some models may need to remove a Wi-Fi card first before you can access the connector.
Carefully flip the clip on the connector up, so it is open.
Fully insert the ribbon cable to this connector and then flip the clip down to close
Connect back the battery connector and put back the bottom of laptop and the screws tighten back.

Major steps should be the same. Pay more attention to find the SATA HDD/SSD connector on the motherboard.
If you encounter some problems you can take pictures of that and send it and ask the question here again.
