Why does my laptop display stop working when an external monitor is jacked in?

Problem/situation
  1. I am an IT helpdesk guy from the Netherlands (a country that for some reason doesn't exist in Acer's list of countries when signing up for an account).
  2. I always use my Acer aspire laptop (model from last winter) with an HDMI cable so that I get to work on 2 screens. Not only that, but I've done this every single working day, for the past 7 months. And no matter what display I plugged in, I never had any issues (except for 1 TV which sometimes flickered).
  3. Today I plug in my laptop to my most commonly used extra screen like I always do with the same HDMI cable.
  4. After 20 minutes, the display of my laptop turns black. So I look at the settings, and I see that the resolution of the laptop display is set to very small, and has been set to an entirely different position. I can't drag the display around or influence it in any way anymore.
  5. When I plug out the HDMI-cable the laptop screen works just fine.
AC solution
  1. I can work on 2 displays again.
  2. Both displays appear in the system dialog screen, and their settings can be changed like usual.
Value
  1. I can't properly work on just 1 display.
