Hi there,

I wanted to know if there was a tool in the BIOS where you can check if the hardware was good on the laptop. I have a Dell laptop and it has this feature so I was wondering if my Acer laptop has it too

The BIOS itself is the tool. It does what is callled a "power on self test" (POST) of the "basic input and output" (BIOS) hardware. When the ACER logo appears, it means that all basic hardware has been initialized and working properly. The basic hardware is the boot drive, the RAM modules, the keyboard, the touchpad, the cpu/gpu, screen, usb ports and a few other input/output devices that are specific to your model.

    Hi DarrylGerald747,

The best way to verify the status of the hard drive is to restart the computer and press the "F2" key during startup. Once the setup utility comes up, go to the diagnostic menu and run a test on the hard drive. If the hard drive shows physical errors it will need to be replaced.
  • @JackEHe is referring to a feature that dell makes available, when the user presses fn+esc before the dell logo. When this feature is enabled, the bios checks the status of battery, processor, ram and hard disk. I know this because I have already used this feature on my brother's dell notebook.

Thanks @egydiocoelho . I have some older Phoenix BIOS machines that display each device test result while POSTing, but not the Insyde BIOS. Do you know of a way to enable this display?

  • @JackE I don't know if there is this option on Acer computers. But note that dell provides an option in the bios, which checks your computer's hardware:

On other dell laptops, if the user presses fn+esc, a test options tab will appear.
