I am trying to connect an Acer swift sf315-41 laptop to 2 external monitors. I can connect one monitor using the hdmi port on the laptop. However, the usb-c port does not seem to support displays, so is there a reliable way to connect a second monitor to one of the usb ports?

Yes, you use a docking station that provides the video signal. There are lots of them out there, just be sure they aren't trying to use the DP over USB-C function instead of generating their own video signal. As you found the gen 1 port doesn't have that feature.

Thanks very much for your help. I found this one from StarTech.com which I think would work. Unless you know of a better brand?

The USB32HDES Slim USB 3.0 to HDMI Adapter turns a USB 3.0 port into an HDMI output with 1920x1200/1080p video support.
