Acer Aspire 3 Is Struggling To Charge

When I have the power cord in it rarely works, I have to move it around a lot and then it may start to charge the battery, but if I move the laptop even slightly (even when I just type something, for example) it stops charging.

I have bought a replacement charger but it still does it, and I have very carefully cleaned the power connection on the laptop, but nothing seems to help. Is there an alternative way of powering the laptop (via a USB cable? Or something else?) or any other thing I can do to get it working properly again?

A few models have battery pack USB charging capability. What is your full A3 model number? For example, A315-44G?

Meanwhile, use a flashlight to look inside the charger jack to make sure the center pin contact is straight and the side slider contacts are visible that must press against the charger's plug barrel. You can use a wooden or plastic toothpick to try to bend the sliders toward the center pin to make them press harder against the plug barrel.

    Hi JackE,

Thank you for the reply, it's an Acer 315-54-50PG

And I'll try your suggestion regarding bending the contact side slider slightly to see if that helps.

    Hi Easwar,

I'd say it's pretty tightly connected, it certainly doesn't seem in any way loose.

Unfortunately it hasn't made any difference. Though I did notice when pushing with a toothpick that the it moved the entire thing (ie the metal circle that the slider's are attached too) slightly, so I think something's definitely become loose over time.

If it was mine and no longer under warranty, I'd remove bottom cover and inspect the jack's solder pin contacts to the mainboard. A solder ball may have cracked from wear and tear of plugging it in and out. Might be fixable by a quick reflow with a penciltip iron.

Thanks for the suggestion, and all of your help in this thread, I'll wait until it stops working completely but once it does I'll definitely give that a go.

Unfortunately it's a few months out of warranty, and I can't really afford to have it sent off to repair.
