Screen goes black intermittently for a few seconds, every few seconds, when gaming. Nitro AN515-43

Whenever I start a game, whether it is Factorio, Hitman, or Control, my screen would go black for a few seconds.  After a few seconds I am returned back to the game.  The game doesn't crash, in fact I can still hear the audio during the black screen, so the game is continuing on.  I have up to date AMD graphics drivers.  Here is my hardware:

Acer Nitro AN515-43
AMD Ryzen 5 3550H
Hybrid Vega 8 graphics with dedicated RX 560X GPU
16GB RAM

This issue has been happening for awhile now.  I removed all the dust I could inside the fans, and I currently have it on top of a laptop cooler.  Doesn't make a difference.  The issue would appear within a couple minutes of me starting the game up, then occurs every few seconds after that.

  • Does this issue also occur when connecting an external hdmi monitor and when you play in windowed mode? What is the bios version?

Hi, thank you for your replies.

It is through my main monitor with an HDMI connection, @165Hrz.  I play in full screen mode.

Your questions made me think to try gaming without an external monitor.  Playing on just the laptop monitor, I do NOT see the same issues.  The resolutions between the two are the same, however the laptop monitor only goes up to 60hz and doesn't have Freesync, while my main monitor is 165hz and has Freesync.  Poking around my Radeon Software settings, I disabled VRR, and voila, I don't see the same issue anymore on my main monitor.  I still have 165hz enabled.

I will continue playing without VRR enabled (by the way, my monitor still have 165hz and Freesync enabled) to see if I continue to encounter the issue.  Hope this helps other people out, it's been aggravating me for the longest time.

Just a quick follow-up.  Disabling VRR has stopped the screen blacking out issue for all my games, although I wonder why enabling VRR would affect it.  Obviously I'd like to be able to use all the features of the RX560X if it is supported, and it doesn't appear to be any official reason why VRR wouldn't be supported in my case.   It shouldn't cause an issue with my Asus monitor, which has official FreeSync support.  Kind of disappointing, but glad the issue has gone away and that I can at least have playable games.
