AN515-53-55G9 thermal shutdown/system crash events

So, I’ve had my Nitro 5 for nearly 2 years, kept up with it (software updates, cleaning internals, etc.)  And I’ve been having thermal shutdown/system crash events fairly often with it for about a year.  I just found this forum today so that’s why I’m only posting about it now.

These events come in one of three forms.  The first, and most common one, is a complete system freeze paired with a black screen and the fans screaming.  The second, still fairly common, is the system will freeze on the screen it’s on and only resolved after forced restart (holding power button until shutdown).  These two can only be resolved by a forced restart or shutdown with the method I just described.

The third one, which has only occurred maybe once (which leads me to believe it’s unrelated) is that it’ll force restart itself.  Thankfully, never had a BSOD, yet.

So, when these events started happening, I started monitoring.  I noticed that when these events occur, the system is under heavy load and the system is running INCREDIBLY hot when these events occur, with CPU temps between 95 and 99C (and even 101C once].  I know it’s a laptop, but I don’t think those temps should ever be considered normal.  I even removed the cooling system (my laptop is out of warranty anyway so I figured why not) and applied new thermal paste to the GPU and CPU then did a deep cleaning afterwards of the cooling fans, etc.

Im just at a loss, and it’s happening so frequently now that it’s almost impossible to use the computer for much more than my college studies.  I bought it because I wanted to be able to game on it, and take it with me for school or when I travel. I’m starting to grow frustrated and I’m reaching out here for help.

Summary of hardware changes:

Removed OEM ram and installed 16 GB PNY 2400MhZ DDR4 Ram

Added 1TB seagate HDD from previous laptop with all my stuff on it. (Spins at 5400 RPM)

Removed cooling system, cleaned processor and GPU with isopropyl alcohol to apply new thermal paste. I used Arctic MX-1. No other changes

Anything would be much appreciated

Also, I think the model number says it but Im running the following:
Imtel i5-8300H
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti, Discrete.

Thank you, again.

Look User72116702 with overheating and OS freezing issues there are many aspects to these problems with laptops, yes you have done the novice things in repasting of the CPU/GPU, cleaned the fans etc etc but and in my opinion there could also be an issue with your fans irrespective of what and if you have monitored the fan speeds.

    As you say and this is alarming “CPU temps between 95 and 99C (and even 101C once]” as at 101° your CPU should have shut down and your laptop should have turned off automatically as its on the “EC Shut down at 100°” OEM that the laptop was designed for! These temps are way too high for a laptop to run at but, this laptop is designed for the following temps OEM;

    CPU TEMPS

    • CPU Turbo off at 90°C; CPU Turbo on at 80°C
    • CPU Prochot on at 98°C; CPU Prochot off at 90°C
    • EC Shut down at 100°C

    GPU TEMPS

    • CPU P-State Max/2 at 95°C; CPU P-State 1 at 84°C
    • CPU Prochot on at 98°C; CPU Prochot off at 90°C
    • EC Shut down at 102°C

In saying all this, all these problems could be from numerous things both software and hardware related, I would inspect the Thermal Module as the GTX-1050 is a two part component that the fans can be removed separately not like the GTX-1060 (that this laptop also comes with) that is one unit, see if all these components are not damaged and are working 100%, I would also replace the fans as that is a critical aspect to dispersing heat and they could be not functioning to their full potential, also and always use a high grade high temp paste like the “Kryonaut Extreme” (that I use and its excellent and specially made for these sorts of laptops) and apply it with the “Pea Dot Method” don't put too much paste onto the CPU/GPU let the heatsink and fans do all the work and don't shield of the CPU/GPU from the heatsink but, never ever use the "Liquid Metal Pastes" that are an option as they are very dangerous in causing shortages in circuitries if they leak onto the motherboard.

Also, I would strongly recommend a good high grade tablet cooler to force more fresh cool air ventilation into the laptops casing and make sure that your GTX-1050 graphics drivers is up to date to the last version 471.41, your Intel drivers are up to date, use and download the “Intel® Driver & Support Assistant” and your main OS is up to date with "Windows Update" as all these aspects will contribute to your laptop functioning properly and 100% towhat its designed for. Btw, the hardware updates that you have made have no effect on your performance problems unless either the spinner HDD (this laptops spec is the SATA3-6.0Gbits/s and its M.2 is at PCIe 8.0GT/s) or the RAM is faulty and not functioning properly or its not a recommended RAM for this laptop (e.g. as overclocked RAM is not suitable or recommended) and all these things are contributing to the laptop having to struggle and labour more and overheating to function at its specified performance, check all the hardware and software of your laptop and make sure that everything is functioning properly. Good luck and hope this helps you out and is a guide, as there are many people that are having your problems and what I've suggested above will rectify allot of these problems unless there is someting specifically wrong within the circuitry inside your laptop and needs diagnoses by a technician to fix, take care.
