I currently own Acer Spin 5 SP513-5178TH  and need to upgrade the current SSD from 120GB to over 250GB. Is this possible without loosing information and if so, how would it be best to do this upgrade?

@Nameste When you buy your 250GB SSD also buy a USB caddy to suit it. Then use disk imaging software to clone from the internal 120GB to the 250GB connected via USB. There's plenty of free & paid software available. I've used Acronis True Image in the past - it's relatively inexpensive. I've also read that the free versions of EaseUS Todo Backup & Macrium Reflect are quite capable but haven't used those. What you want to do is clone everything including the 120GB partitioning so that you get the hidden boot & backup partitions as part of the operation.

If all goes to plan, you should be able to just do a straight swap of the 120GB & 250GB drives then boot into the new drive with everything intact. At worst you may have to restore your OS while preserving your data.

You'll probably end up with 250GB of unallocated space after the cloning operation. You can use disk manager to expand your existing partition(s) into that space or create a new drive in that space.

Your SP513-51 has a place in it for a 2.5" HDD or SSD, although some came with an eMMC drive embedded on the motherboard. If yours has a 120GB SSD it is likely the eMMC type, although it is possible it's a 2.5" SSD instead. If yours is a 2.5" then use the procedure Athwart outlines, if you use Macrium Reflect the cloning is free. If you have a eMMC drive then just install the new SSD in the 2.5" mount, do the clone with both attached and then use the F12 menu to select the new drive as the default.
