Your Nitro 5 AN515-42 has provisions and comes OEM with either 1x or 2x drives of either a spinner HDD at 5400rpm or up to 7200rpm SATA-3 6.0Gbits/s and that can be changed very easily by opening the bottom door hatch (which the RAM also has and can be changed) and changed to a type 2.5" SSD at SATA-3 6.0Gbits/s drive as a boot drive or a slave and can also have the type M.2 SATA-3 6.0Gbits/s drives (see caption below) that is used usually for the boot drive or visa versa and these are the listed Acer OEM service manual types of drives that your Nitro 5 AN515-42 takes:

    2.5" spinner 5400rpm HDD
    SATA-3 6.0Gbits/s Drives (not NVMe)
    2.5" spinner HDD'S @ SATA-3 6.0Gbits/s - 1TB - WDC WD10SPZX-21Z10T or TOSHIBA MQ04ABF100
    2.5" spinner HDD'S @ SATA-3 6.0Gbits/s - 2TB - Seagate ST2000LM007

    M.2 SATA-3 6.0Gbits/s Drives

    M.2 @ SATA-3 6.0Gbits/s - 128GB OEM drive  - KINGSTON RBU-SNS8180S3/128GJ or HYNIX HFS128G39TND-N210A
    M2. @ SATA-3 6.0Gbits/s256GB OEM drive  - HYNIX HFS256G39TND-N210A or Micron MTFDDAV256TBN-1AR1ZABYY

M.2 type drive that fits your Nitro 5 AN515-42

You can run a 1x M.2 SSD and a 1x 2.5" SSD together, the M.2's are usually used for the boot drive and the 2.5" are also used for boot drives and slave drives but and with all these SSD's and spinner HDD's if you want to use a larger than 2GB capacities in windows OS's then the drive has to be formatted in GUID Partition Table (GPT) as the old LBR/Legacy can only handle 2TB.

Also and once you have fitted an SSD and cloned your existing operating system to the SSD then enable the TRIM command that allows the operating system to communicate to the SSD and let it know which blocks of data should be safely and completely removed and not just mark the blocks of data as a deleted when the files are deleted. This makes the drive to be writable again and operate faster.

Of course you can install Win-10 on the new 2.5” SSD, as the new SSD 2.5 is the same drive spec SATA-3 6GB/sec except but its faster and not prone to bearing and head problems which it seems that you have with your old OEM spinner HDD, as then you will have the same setup as what you have now. Clone the spinner HDD Win-10 onto your new SSD, it’s a simple process, as a spinner HDD is just not adequate enough for an OS like Win-10 anymore to be installed on it.
