Just tried using one of the usb ports for first time with my external hard drive and was shocked at how difficult it was to go in! And it doesn't even seem to go in fully, (a good 3 or 4 mm of metal still exposed) doesn't seem right, but it has registered and hard drive is showing up on computer. I didn't want to force it any further, but is it supposed to go in fully?

Not all usb's go inside fully as expected. its not going to effect the usb nor the unit until its detected properly and no loose connections. i mean like detected and disconnecting continuously. even i had a desktop with same issue. it wont fit on the front side ports fully.  maybe these parts inside the usb are not in proper place. if its under warranty you can claim warranty.

It's brand new, just seems like a poor design. Never had a usb or any connection for that matter not become flush with the casing on any device. Oh well, it seems to work, doesn't seem to disconnect.

Its all upto your satisfaction. if you think you can deal with it then its fine, as its working fine with out interruption. if you think your not satisfied then call the acer support for service and get it fixed as its under warranty.  Good luck mate :)

My Spin 5 seats the USB devices about as far as most of my other machines. There is a couple of mm of space between the plastic housing of the cable and the edge of the laptop, but that's done to ensure you get full seated without the housing getting held away from the machine.

Is it an SP513-55N or a different model? And can i ask how big is the metal part of your usb drives? All my usb's, hardrives, chargers etc. have 12mm and have always gone in 100% every machine I've ever used, but only seem to go in about 9.5 mm into this computer. Are yours quite difficult to get in and out also? I even have scratch marks on them now where they've struggled.
