About a month ago the unit slowed down and started and stopped while logging in and searching the web. I understand that this usually means the the hard drive is failing. The only additional programs on the unit is Word Perfect Home/Student and Hallmark Card Studio. Since the unit is barely more than 2 1/2 years old, I very disappointed with the quality of Acer products. What are my options?

Thanks for the advice. The system seems to have corrected itself. It starts up okay and no longer starts and stops when surfing the web. The hard drive has 90% available.

Well it depends on what is actually going on... You are right in that a global slowdown is often caused by a failing drive, but there are plenty of other things that can give the same symptoms. Try starting Resource Monitor and watching to see what happens when things get slow. Are you running very high on memory usage? Maybe the disk is at 100%? What about the CPU, is it maxed out?
To see if the drive is being an issue you can do two things, first run a disk check on it (properties; tools; error checking on the C: drive). It will likely not be able to do it without a restart, and could take a long time to complete so take that into consideration. Next run a test of SMART on the disk. Drives track what kinds of things they are seeing and report through the SMART system and that will often show if the drive is starting to fail.
What size and type of drive is it? Two and a half years ago it might have had something like a 1TB HDD or a 128GB/256GB SSD installed. HDDs typically fail earlier than SSDs do, just because they have actual moving parts to wear, but this amount of time would be earlier than normal.

Run one of the SMART scanners on it anyway, just to see if the drive wasn't glitching...
