Replacement Fan Problems - Aspire 5 A515-52G-53PU

Hello,

I've bought a replacement fan DC28000JSF0  for my Acer Aspire 5 A515-52g from an official Acer spare parts supplier. As the fan listed for my 52g was out of stock for the near future and I discovered that all numbers/details on the fan for the 51g are identical,  I ordered that one instead.

It does seem to be the exact same model, all details stamped on it match my old one. However, when I tried it out, as soon as I switched on the computer, it started immediately at full speed and wouldn't switch off again.

Anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks

While the technical details might seem to be the same, the ACER part no. for both the 52 and 52G models is 23.H14N2.001.  And the part no. for the 51 and 51G models is 23.GP4N2.001. Close but not necessarily identical. It probably should work OK but can't confirm this with different part numbers. Arguably the best way to rule  in or rule out hardware issue, is an erase everything ALT+F10 cold boot factory reset after backing up your HDD or SSD. A drastic measure for sure but about the best I can suggest under the circumstances. Sorry.

When you first turn it on, it should run a full speed for quite some time to overcome possible stiction, then back down if the cpu/gpu is not heating from lack of proper paste on the heatsink the fan sets on or too many startup programs or other applications running at the  same time.  Jack E/NJ

It does not switch on like the normal old fan. With that you can start the computer and at some point you notice the fan is on. It has different speeds and goes off and back on as it needs.
The new one, as soon as power hits it, it blasts and never ever stops. And the laptop is cold to the touch. You can't tolerate it for long either, because you can't take the noise after a while. it does not stop. it's simply the fastest speed non-stop. Surely that's not right.

You mean why it needs replacing? The computer ran hot one day from dust (it wasn't that bad, during the summer it can get worse). I'd been gone for about half an hour or so and the fan was making lots of noise. I swith off the computer and let it cool down but the fan seemed to have sustained some damage, i.e. when you moved the computer afterwards or knocked it accidentially, it would start making lots of rough noise. It used to be that when you tapped the computer, it would calm down again and go back to normal, but that doesn't work anymore  so I wanted to replace it.
Other than turning rough when the computer is moved, it always still worked/works normally.

Have you tried to see if you can still control fanspeed with SpeedFan freeware? It might suggest a mainboard CPU/GPU sensor issue happened when it overheated and is no longer controllable. Jack E/NJ

I installed that a couple of days ago actually. :) But because I don't know that much about computers, I didn't want to play with it and do something wrong. I simply don't know how it works.
If I go to configure/Fans it shows none, it's blank. Generally, I can only see the temperatures.

In theory the fan should work, yes?

Check ACER Care Center and ACER Quick Access apps in the Windows start menu to see if they have any fan control options. Jack E/NJ

Can you explain a bit more the differences between the two fans?

On the actual fan there are three parts of information:
    FJPS5 DC 5V 0.5A
    DFS541105FC0T EP
    DC28000JSF0

And then it has a paper sticker with a qr code and two more numbers
    DC28000JSF0 FCC2
and another that is different for each fan.

Are they physically the same but have more information in them so the other computer can't use them?

Sorry, the only differences I can find is the part numbers and which laptop each part no. is intended to fit. You can try googling each  'part no.' and 'specifications' but usually only get hits that indicate which laptop models they fit, not their electronic control details. Since these brushless fan motors are commodity items, I'd guess that they are electronically similar but cannot confirm it with 100% certainty. From your description of how the old fan got noisy and how the laptop got hot while you were gone for a half hour, I'd have to guess the mainboard might've also sustained some damage. Accordingly, I can only suggest two possibilities. That you backup your HDD or SSD and do a factory reset to see if that resolves the issue. Or you can google the correct part number to see if there are any vendors or sellers who will ship it  to your location. Jack E/NJ

Thanks for all your advice. It's much appreciated. :)

I'll do the reset in the next few days or so.
I've found instructions how to do it and wanted to ask: apparently I'll be given the option of keeping or deleting personal files in addition to removing apps and settings. (I'll back up my stuff and take out my HDD no matter what.) Is it okay if I choose the keep option?
I'll let you know how it turns out. If it still is a problem afterwards, I'll see that eventually I get hold of the correct item.

    Thanks again.

It's OK but only second best to the erase everything option. The erase everything factory reset brings the whole system & driver software back to a factory fresh out of the box state. In either case, you should still back up the system and drivers as it now stands.

Reset did the trick. Fan is doing well.  :3

Why did the computer manage to use the old fan but not the new one?

    Anyway, thanks a lot!  :)

  • can you check if the old fan and the new fan have the same voltage with a multimeter? I think it should be around 3v to 5v.

Of course I would do it again. B)   I'd forgotten to tick 'I have no internet' and used the microsoft account for the settings and the username it picked from my email looked terrible. There was no way I could leave that. I'd thought briefly when I put it in: it wants a micr. account instead of the normal- should I check online how to proceed....... But decided not to, so it's my own fault. Hey ho.  :p

Thanks a million for all your help Jack.  =):+1::+1:

Both fans are identiacal in that 5V 0.5A.   All details on the fans are identical except for the paper sticker's second number.
