My Acer Spin 5 (SP513-54N-74V2) wont power on.

The power suddenly turned off on my Spin 5 without warning.  The battery was not low at the time.  When I press the power button I hear a soft buzzing sound, but the laptop will not turn on at all.

I've tried pressing the battery reset button for 5 seconds but the laptop still wont power on.

How to fix it so I can turn on my laptop???

Try the full reset procedure for the battery. Disconnect the charger and anything else you have plugged in. Press and hold that reset button for 15-30 seconds then release. Wait 15-30 minutes to allow everything too fully discharge then plug power only back in. Wait for the full battery indication and then try turning it on. Let us know how that works and we'll try other things if it doesn't fix it for you.

That seems to have done the trick.  Do I have a defective battery?   My laptop is only 6 months old.  How do I prevent this from happening again?
  • Can you check battery wear with the hwinfo64 program?

    Hi dfwhered,

    # Power drain,

    1)Unplug the AC power adapter.
2)Press and hold the Power button down until the unit goes off.
3)Search for a pinhole on the backside of your laptop, insert a small paperclip in the battery reset pinhole, press and hold it down for 25 seconds. Then release the paperclip and try to turn on the unit and check.
Check this T/S and post the result.

The laptop is rebooting on its own regularly.   Does anyone know if this is related to the battery?  or do i have another issue with the laptop?

Easwar, what does T/S mean to check? Also, do you have to press and hold the power button? Can you not just shut down like you always do?

What happen is the software running on the battery can be a bit buggy, which causes the internal numbers to get corrupt and the battery thinks it's discharged a whole bunch more than it really is. When a Lithium-ion battery gets too low it disables recharging to minimize the risk of fire. When you do the full reset procedure those numbers are reset to the defaults so a battery that was reporting it was bad will again report correctly. If you are unable to charge and a full reset doesn't bring it back then likely the battery really has gone bad. What makes it all a little more complex is that often Windows itself gets the battery calibration numbers wrong, so you can have a perfectly good battery that Windows thinks is almost full discharged. That's fixed with a recalibration done by running on battery until Windows shuts down, then recharging fully before starting up again. Cycle through that a few times and it'll be back to being fairly accurate.

    Hi dfwhered,

Sorry for understanding it late. T/S is nothing but troubleshooting. Which means "I request you to follow the troubleshooting steps suggested in the community and update the result".

Hello @billsey - thank you for your previous comments; I followed the steps but unfortunately the battery of my Acer Spin (SP513-54N) still does not charge.

I can only use my laptop when it's being powered, as when I unplug the cable, it automatically indicates "Your battery is very low". Could you please help me find out what the issue is!? Many thanks in advance.

@SolvitaZ you should start a new thread for your question (use the Ask a Question button) since this one is so old. Include your full model number (SP513-54N-xxxx, usually on the same sticker as your serial number), what is happening and what you have tried so far. Your system is a bit new for a battery failure, but they have been known to happen...
