How to connect my Acer S220HQL monitor’s DVI-D port to my new Mac Mini with M1 processor Model A2348

I have an old Mac Mini connected to the Acer via an HDMI-to-DVI adapter and that works fine.  But when I move that to the HDMI 2.0  port on the new Mini, nothing!

As a test at the store the new Mini works with an HDMI monitor.  The new Mini will also work  — partially — with the Acer through the Thunderbolt 3 port and the Acer’s VGA port via an adapter.  The problem there is it won’t wake up when the Mini wakes up.  I have to unplug the Thunderbolt 3 port and plug it in again.  And I’d rather use DVI rather than VGA on the Acer anyway.

Do you think I could find a Thunderbolt 3-to-DVI adapter that would work?  I see USB 3-to-DVI adapters but am not sure if one of them would work.  I guess I could try, but if anyone has run into this problem and can suggest something, I’d be most grateful.
